Apple announces iPhone 4

With Voice calls and Video calls being the same price (and device independent) I think its a big fail for the iPhone4, that and all the other issues that still plagues it since it started out. The screen is something that I am very impressed with. I would have preferred a 16:9 wide-screen since it works pretty nicely if you want to watch videos and most monitors and TVs are the same resolution. The iPhone has never been renowned for its photographic skills to I am sure that the camera is not the reason for its 3:2 ratio.

So happy to see the metal bits are back in the design! Hate the 3G plastic crap after using the 1G and 4G is just... OMG! Metal and glass all round, seriously: I am going to gush about the design a bit here but does it get any more Bauhaus/Braun/B&O?

Apple has hit every chord for me in terms of design. The iPhone 4 is right up there with the premium brands design-wise. Whine about features all you like but a few years ago you'd have payed a mint for a phone that merely looked like this one does. That alone is massive victory, then add to that the fact that they are still innovating, adding features, bumping performance... total geek-gasm... WANT!

People who have been hands on with the Retina display are gushing about it - word is it has to be seen to be believed - it is being compared to 'live-print' which sounds freaking insance even though I haven't the foggiest what it could mean.

One quibble: I can record and edit freaking HD video on this phone but I cannot sync music/calendar/contacts wirelessly? WTF dude?
Priority-wise I guess a $4.99 app is better for Apple than a free (and bloody obvious) OS feature but come aaaahhhhhn!

...then again: having to plug it in to sync means I get to touch the damn beautiful thing even more.

Way to miss the point... try to keep up pal - FaceTime is only over WiFi, I can't imagine it would be much different from using skype except that just as other phones have had gimmicky video chat for years Apples version will be the one that people actually use.

You really do seem to think the world of a company that has a one-model-fits-all approach when it comes to making mobile phones? The so called other gimmicky phones allow pretty much any app, including Skype and Fring, to use its cameras so doing video over what ever connection is at your disposal is nothing new. Much like the iPhone really, its nothing new, just a remix of all Steves favorite things in a shiny case. But hey, if you are happy with that kind of package I guess you are making Steve a very happy man.

Several apps in the App Store are several hundred megs, in fact I downloaded Street Fighter this week: 210meg, downloaded on device - over WiFi.

Hi soldierboi. In 2.1 you can't save applications to the SD card, no. But 2.2 (Froyo) fixed that.

To the iPhone's credit - one thing I do not like about the Android phones is that they do not have the "built-in" storage of the iPhone. I would love for Android phones to also have at least 16GB "built-in" and then expandable with SD card. SD cards always feel so "fragile"

Nice thing is that I sync EVERYTHING over the air and drag and drop music to my Desire as it is seen as a flash drive. Removes all dependency on the silly iTunes crap

When I had my iPhone, it was always connected to my laptop for syncing and all. Now the only time I need to connect my Desire is if I want to copy files or music across - which i COULD do wirelessly via Dropbox as well.

Not interested in the iPhone 4, I had a 3G - got bored of it, without jailbreaking it is just a toy.

Got my new HTC Desire recently - fantastic! O yeah, on some web pages, I can view the Flash movies in the page itself, no need to use the Youtube app. And this is still on Android 2.1 - wait till we get Froyo!

Apple still aint got no Flash , who knows when HTML5 will be ready to offer the same functionality as Flash?

Actually, there is a way to view Flash on iPhone - not that I care for it because everyone is moving away from Flash.

Dont know why youve had problems downloading 'big files'. On several occassions I have downloaded 100-300MB files directly onto my iPhone without any problems and at very high speeds.

BlackBerry + iPod Touch (or iPad) = best. As a communications device the BlackBerry remains unbeatable imo. The iPod Touch (or iPad) is for all that other stuff (apps, etc). I use this BB/iPod combo and it works great.

I cant agree. Everytime I use my fathers Blackberry I cringe. Buttons are too small and (this may be network related) it struggles to open / display properly lots of sites out there. Not to mention anything anything out of port 80 and it freaks out (I need to use port 2082 and 2085 for work purposes via a browser which works fine on my iPhone but not on a BlackBerry - once again though, I do believe this is network related due to 'blackberry internet being free').

It depends on the user's needs. I need a strong communications device with keyboard as I use e-mail on the trot a lot. iPhone's soft keyboard just doesn't work for me (never will). The BB BIS/BES is also a winner (no additional data costs). But I also want what the iOS offers (apps, etc) so I use the iPod Touch for that ... although it is WiFi access dependant. Works for me. If/when Apples brings out an iPhone with a keypad and dataplan similar to BIS/BES I'll go for it for sure.

So with Skype and Fring can you switch cameras mid-call? Is the experience seamlessly integrated into the device in terms of both hardware and software?

Sure, maybe perfection isn't for everyone, plenty simply cannot afford to be part of the quest for it but for a person who relishes detail and beauty and who has the means to enjoy it: this piece of technology is the effing berries!

That's up to Vodacom, not Apple, and considering how "abused" it would be I [regrettably] doubt it will happen any time soon.

In the meantime I'll continue to use both my BBerry and my iPhone.

I'm not talking about screen resolution and the human eye. You said having 3:2 instead of 16:9 is a waste of screen space and I'm curious as to why. For photographers 3:2 is a perfect resolution, for reading books the wider aspect ratio will feel more familiar, having a bigger map on my GPS is better, for browsing bigger is better. What I asked is why 3:2 is a "retarded" choice if you discount watching video.

These are all apps that mommy Steve OK'ed before the time so it is safe for junior and won't be a choking hazard. iPhone users famously throw this number around saying they hey 2 billion apps in their app store - while the average user has 2 or maybe 22 of those on his iPhone.

Dude, we get it. You are not a fan of locked down/well marketed/premium brand systems... despite the fact that unless you are on Android you are still fully within the realm of proprietary software.

Regardless: there are those that agree with you but they sure as hell are not the developers earning a tidy living off of the App Store nor are they the users who have access to ****TONS of apps. No one is telling you that other systems suck and lack morals or ethics which makes your attacks sound all the more bitter, the real joke though is that your ravings have little effect on those who have tasted the fruit - you are giving your self a hernia/embolism for no good reason there big guy... chill a bit.
