Apple co-founder praises Microsoft innovation

Well, well. From the horse's mouth, I guess ?
Unfortunately Apple needs to constantly come up with new inventions, else they would be severely critised. The question - can they produce the next big iX ?

IMHO : I think Microsoft is off to a good start in the mobile scene and wil become the standard for Tablet/Pad use over the next few years....till the next "big thing" !

Microsoft Innovations:

PlayForSure just before they screwed their PlayForSure patners (Creative Labs) by releasing the Zune with its DRM which was no longer compatible with PlayForSure
Forcing anyone who wanted to buy a new system to have to buy Windows too
Online activation for operating systems.
Terrible EULAs.
Ripping off Apple's QuickTime video codec.
Operating systems which make it easy for viruses to spread through Admin default, Autorun etc.
DRM in its media
...
 
If by innovative he means so far behind the curve on technology that they've resorted to a hail mary anything goes form of experimentalism then I guess he has a point. In other news I see Sony has innovated in the realm of keyboard branding recently so they're running a close second.

You say that like you think Apple is ahead of the curve or even current with technology ... but you do realise the Apple is far behind any technology, right?

Well both apple and google in this case, but yeah that's what I think.
 
Why?

I'm not fighting - but I see them as rather waiting on new features until they've matured or proven. Think 3G and MMS where they were 3+ years behind ... and NFC that isn't introduced on any iPhone despite 50 million+ devices using it. They may have a reason to hold back - but it's not particularly innovative or ground breaking when the features come out.

I was using colour touch on my Palm Treo in 2006ish too ... so it's not that either?
What makes them ahead of the curve in your eyes?
 
What makes them ahead of the curve is that they have been selling devices in markets where the markets are and have been moving towards ineluctably for the past 10 years, and Microsoft has been ineptly trying to copy their success and missing huge trends in those markets every time. You're focusing on odd little technological exclusions, but they've always excluded much more important technologies than NFC; meanwhile apple has been stealing microsoft's milkshake for 6 years in phones and now 3 years in tablets, and Microsoft still hasn't responded effectively.
 
Forcing people to buy their apps twice (Phone and tablet have complete different markets that do not talk to each other) <--- now that is innovation big time.
 
Ah - you're thinking sales means innovative?
They sell more, so they're better and more innovative?

I'm talking the 'odd technological' exclusions ... 3G? Serious? Odd little exclusion?
 
No I'm not talking about sales meaning innovation. I'm talking about the curve of where technology is actually going from a macroscopic viewpoint. 6 years of losing in smartphones after deriding the iPhone publicly. 3 years behind on tablets because they didn't see the future when it was revealed. A least android recognised it when they saw it and responded appropriately. That is the real curve; not x or y feature.
 
Microsoft might have missed some huge trends in the market - did they miss the X-Box? Did they miss Office? FFS - did they miss computer operating systems?

Microsoft STILL has the bulk of desktop operating systems at their command, regrdless of how 'fail' everyone seems to think of them without coming up with something better!

I personally CBA with browsing the Internet on anything other than my desktop, unless I am in a queue somewhere.

Microsoft is STILL a commanding force in the IT world, and don't ever under-estimate them!

EDIT: Oh, wait, MS STILL has their Ninja founder floating around!

PS3/Wii/Sega Saturn/etc were there before them. Xbox division made a loss for a long time.

Did they miss Office? FFS - did they miss computer operating systems?

Office - actually WordPerfect, AmiPro etc existed before MS Word. Operating Systems - OS/2 Warp was superior to Win95. They had good marketing and they forced vendors to sell Windows with hardware.

XBox was making a loss because they were looking for market gain. And MS Office consists of more than just Word.

MS had that TerraServe thing before Google Maps and they are pretty innovative for us technical folk (developers and the like).

-PS3 and Wii were released after Xbox. I think you meant the original Playstation, in which case we'd have to go all the way back to Atari when it comes to who was first.

- Apple arguably has better marketing. Why have they not been able to come up with a successful competing office suite or desktop/server OS?

- So did Apple. Unless you believe that they were the first to release a portable music player or smartphone.
