Bad news for USB-C on iPhone 15

Apple could potentially limit the usefulness of third-party USB-C cables and other peripherals with its upcoming iPhone, according to a report from Chinese tech leaker Mobile Chip Expert.

In a post on Weibo, the leaker said an iPhone client told them that Apple is making a USB-C authenticator chip, which will feature in the ports of this year's iPhone and MFi-certified devices.

Apple:
Apple argues that the MFi program protects its customers’ devices from products that could potentially harm their devices due to poor quality control.
Also Apple:
Apple’s other devices that currently come with USB-C ports — like the iPad — don’t have a proprietary interface that requires MFi-certified USB-C cables to perform optimally.

Magically how USB devices for iPads and Laptops are fine, but they need big uncle Apple to protect the iPhone. I suppose Apple thinks their customers are as dumb as I think they are.

Samsung is like this as well.
The "USB-C" charger port on the phone is incompatible with USB-C cables, yet their latest galaxy buds work fine with USB-C cables.
It shows that USB is a shitty spec and is not helping the consumer.

I actually don't mind the anti "right to self-repair" stance Apple seemingly takes. Hahaha, I don't want anyone other than Apple to repair my iPhone 13 Pro, should the need ever arise (hopefully not).

From my experiences, a lot of these places that repair handsets do a poor job at it, thus ruining your smartphone. Also, lots of poor-quality 3rd party hardware which also ruins the smartphone.

How would apple not having right to repair restrictions prevent you from going to apple exclusively for repairs?

It does not.

Just commenting that I am happy that Apple makes it harder for other parties to repair (or work on) Apple devices. I have seen some of the measures Apple has in place on their devices and was surprised, and amazed (based on YouTubers trying to open up their iPhones).

When I still had an Android, I took my Android phone in for repair at a 3rd party (not Huawei, as they are the manufacturer), thinking I could get the fix done quick, and within reasonable price... biggest mistake ever! Never again :)

Except when Apple comes and says "Irreperable, but here's a discount on a new one" while the actual parts and repair are a few bucks in comparison

Louis Rossman has highlighted this often

Context: They actually did this with my Boss so not some random guess

Maybe USB spec is open for interpretation - Bluetooth spec seems to be a lot worse, so many major differences and issues between platforms.

There is some room for handshaking and extra features - extra speed charging outside USB-PD for example

But we know Apple's gonna charge a fee to certify things and lock it behind a DRM chip

Odd,my s22 and s23 ultra charge faster on my generic cables. Even my laptop charger works

You are right.
I made it all up I'm just attention seeking. Good spot.
