Apple has lost it's innovation

You do realise that you have become what you seem to distain the most, right? On one hand you bleat (sheep reference) about the failings of the iPad yet on the other hand you have expressed an [irrational] desire to own the latest model even though you know that those failings are still going to be there.

Wear the badge with pride. ;)

Not to mention interest in getting an iMac.... :erm:

Elimentals, as a power user of Android, do you think Google is doing enough with Android to assist tablet manufacturers in taking on Apple?

Or is this intrinsically an issue with the "open system" approach? Strategies, incentives, market driving forces are misaligned between the different players. Tablets are very much about user experience, the complete package, and in Android's case there may be too many cooks spoiling the broth?

I have little experience with Android on tablets, but given the great strides made in the smartphone market it still baffles me that they offer so little resistance in the tablet space.

I think Google is following the let the chips fall where they may attitude, ie: let the market do as the market sees fit. I do feel that they started to pay more attention, especially with the new Google Play move that combined Android, Music, Books and Movies under one umbrella but don't think its enough.

Its a bit hard to say if what Google is doing is good or bad, as a firm supporter of Open Source, I love the idea that they only give the tools and let the people decide, as a End User I believe they should do more to give me a quality experience.

If I was in charge I would have split Google's market into 2 sections, the open for as it is now and a Vetted section where developer pay more to get applications tested and certified ala iTunes approach, as for the hardware I do believe the OEM's are trying way to hard to cut corners to make a quick buck instead of investing in a proper ecosystem and push for future sales.

I personally love my Android tablet especially with what I can do with it(Functionality) vs my iPad but I do feel that the iPad's hardware and performance is unmatched. Android Tablets days are numbered, not by iPad sales but what Microsoft/Windows 8/Nokia will bring to the table.

Yea - I never said I HATE it ...

I said they're average.

Plus I don't *think* the iMac have the limits and restrictions of iOS?

No, and as it is Unix underneath, most things are very fluid.

However, is is still a Mac/Apple experience. So Apple make certain decisions to make things work in a certain way. And everything is not configurable as in Windows/Linux. Apple value constancy of experience

2 years since the first iPad was released they've managed 2 consecutive drastic updates:
from 1 core to 4

You do realise that the iPad 3 is only dual CPU don't you ?

And that some of the new Android tablets really have quad CPU's and 2GB RAM ?

It Dual CPU with Quad GPU on the SOC. Which allows the Tegra 3 spanking, and powering of the display

Why does the world not gasp in awe when that Huawei tablet is released?

Screen resolution aside, it appears the same or better in every respect?

They don't have the marketing department that Apple has.

At a guess, it's real world battery life is not as good.
Poor / cheap industrial design.
Iit doesn't have a good tablet OS (I imagine it will get Windows 8 by next year though. Until then it is stuck with Android)

But most importantly, as many, many tech journalists have written, "there is no tablet market, only an iPad market". It is like the mp3 player market and the iPod market.

Yeah, Apple dominates the tablet market because of the marketing department.
It's definitely not that people prefer iPads. No, not that

Good question, which I will attempt to answer, bear with me. Have you used an Android tablet? Personally I don't find them to be nearly as usable, full featured or responsive as iPads.

User experience matters. Android is not as slick as iOS. They don't have the iTunes App store and Music/Movie store. The same reason why the iPod confused all the pundits and outsold the competition. People know the iPad. And developers are attracted to the platform because of the large numbers on it - it's a virtuous cycle.

What I'm talking about is obviously a big area of contention but to reinforce my point, consider the comparison that Tim Cook had between the Galaxy Tab and iPad at the iPad event. He said that over 100 tablets were released last year, but none have the gret experience of the iPad. He compared the Twitter and Yelp apps on both platforms. There is no comparison - the Android tablet apps look like stretched phone apps, with small text and heaps of whitespace. The iPad apps look and work much better. There aren't amazing apps like iPhoto on Android tablets.

Nobody really cares or knows about Android tablets because they haven't delivered a knockout product with iPad. Maybe if they can get a great Android 4.0 tablet out with some killer apps that blow the iPad away people will look. Until then they are coming across as poor facsimiles of the iPad.

Surely you agree marketing has something to do with it?

Not extensively, no

Would the responsiveness not be the manufacturer hardware?

If that's the case, perhaps Android need to have some type of control over who uses Android

Sure, marketing plays a part. But trying to pass it off as just marketing is disingenuous.

The responsiveness issue has to do with Android itself and how the thread priority model was created. Not the hardware

No, Android has poor responsiveness because of lack of GPU acceleration. It's smooth with the Tegra 3 and better, but Tegra 2 honeycomb tablets are jerky, even on the homescreen!

It goes deeper than just poor responsiveness though, the OS is just much more complicated than iOS. The Marketplace is decidedly inferior. There just is a major lack of polished and impressive apps that the iPad has.

See, I'd tend to agree with you, except here ....

the OS is just much more complicated than iOS

Have you tried attaching a file in email?
Is that logical to you?

I tried for the first time a few days ago and - although I usually know how to send email - I had to Google to find out. There are many, many folk that complain about the same thing ... and it's very true

There just is a major lack of polished and impressive apps that the iPad has

They do seem to have more options that us though?

But again, I'm attached at the mere mention that they have things we don't

It's a tradeoff. Yes you can't attach files to emails on the iPad. There is no conception of files on the iPad. Then again the Android tablets don't have apps like Pages, Infinity Blade, Garageband and iMovie, to name but a few.

This is why the iPad does so well as a consumer device, and why my grandpa understands it, whereas the Android devices have a following under technology enthusiasts.

All the major tech sites covered it as they do with all new tech, then they review it and still most reviewers favour the iPad. The average joe does not know there is a new iPad or cares, those who are exited are owners, or people who plan on getting an iPad based on reviews.

It's true, Apple has great marketing but it's non existent in SA and many parts of the world that lack an official Apple presence.

Yep. Each app manages it's own files, and the sharing of those files. So, if I want to send someone a photo via email, I go into iPhoto and choose share via email. Similarly, in GoodReader, if I want to share a .cs file, I select it and click share via email. Etc.

Not a bad mechanism at all. Just different from a PC (Similar to Mac OSX though)
