Apple-Tesla iCar dreams

Rumors have been swirling since news broke this week of a possible meeting between Apple’s top executive for acquisitions and the CEO of electric car maker Tesla.
 
It'll drive itself, but only to an aPple approved list of places.

The boot will only accept aPple luggage.

It will be impossible to fit a towbar.

Ford will be sued for infringing aPple's "4 wheeled vehicle", "using pedals as controls" and "fitting a radio to a vehicle" patents. aPple will keep their "round axle mounted device for mobility improvement" patent in reserve.

God help us all.
 
I think this rumour is more in line with Apple's green initiative and when it comes down to Apple / Tesla, batteries comes to mind. Apple is already investing in “green” production plants and then we have Tesla’s upcoming Giga-Factory, seems Apple wants to invest.

An Apple car would kill the industry. They'll start patenting everything. God help us.
 
This is a pretty obvious area for them to move into. Dashboard software is notoriously horrible and the car manufacturers would probably love to hand it over to someone like Apple or Google. And on the flipside, Apple and Google both know that commute times are prime attention spaces that aren't being tapped into. There's not an unlimited amount of attention time that people can give to media consumption and commuting is a big potential area.

QNX is better situated and have pedigree within this market, with near to no complaints in the industry. The only thing which is likely to be an Achilles' Heel is their holding company, they can always dislodge.

It'll kill the industry for sure. Can you imagine when the same loud-mouth marketing *******s who own iPhones get into their iCars and start preaching about how much better it is, and how everyone wants their car to be just like an iCar. If the car industry is like the PC industry, a tiny vocal minority, using a product with 0.003% market share outside the US, will be influencing how the other 99.997% uses their cars. Disaster.

I don't see it. How does Apple's business model fit here? For Google it is a natural fit, Apple not so much.

Yea... so I guess that with Google it's about attention, but with Apple it's more about integration and leverage. The same reason they'd partner up with Nike on fitness without trying to make shoes - it adds value to their devices.

Apple can release a piece of stool with iOS on it and cerebus will say it's a good move

Sure, but I see in-car systems being more like the iPod/iPhone accessory market where other companies support Apple devices first. Can't see Apple being directly involved beyond providing better APIs in iOS.
