Apple iPhone 5 disappointment

You would care to show the statistics? Keeping in mind that the last quarter was pretty hamstrung due to supply issues on new lines and even on iPhone4 apparently which I don't get myself, but whatever. In 2012 overall, Apple had the highest yearly revenue ever in the history of mankind by a pretty decent margin.

This quarter has also been 1week shorter than the year ago quarter

The iMac line was the biggest sufferer of the supply issues, and the ipad Mini I think. The iMac had sold 700k fewer this quarter than the same period last year, which looks terrible. But it's got a lot to do with the supply issues plus the shorter week; that would have compensated. Still there's no question that imac and ipod growth is slowing down, which doesn't matter so much as long as it's well offset by other product lines.

Considering that that chart was last updated in November 2012, it seems pretty clear that what happened for the major downward turn was buyers waiting for the iPhone5's release. You can see a mirrored dip the previous year for the same period while the 4 was due to be replaced by the 4S.

Don't say it "mirrors previous years", that drop in share is noticable compared to other years.

You are saying that iphones drop 10% sales share and andriod increase (more than) 10% sales share over 2 quaters means that more people are going from andriod to iphone (lets keep this conversation in context)?

I didn't say that at all. I think at this point in time it's pretty much stabilized between the two of them; if Apple's Q1 results were taken into account the numbers would again skew higher on iOS and slightly lower on Android. Android's growth overall though hasn't meant that Apple has slowed down on sales - it means that they have lost out in market share. For instance in China where they were behind on penetration, Android gained a huge number of sales. That wasn't at the expense of Apple sales, but it was at the expense of their overall market share.

There's no way to brush off the insane growth of Android the past year, and I wouldn't even really want to (more smartphones on the market is only a good thing). It's just crazy. I use an Android phone for one thing. All I'm saying here is, Apple's iPhone sales are also doing nothing but growing.

Personally I have seen one of my friends get a iPhone 5 (he is a developer and needs one, he has a S3 as well) and about eight of them move from iPhone to Android

Funny enough, I am actually 100% right. That was my PERSONAL observation so how exactly am I wrong?

Meanwhile who else has innovated to the level you expect? Samsung? They just resized Android to every possible dimension as far as I can see. It works; but it's hardly radical.
Android has. 2.3 to 4.2 has more innovations than Apple's software has had in the last 2 years.

Q1 2012 - 37 million iPhones. Q1 2013 - 47.8 million iPhones. That's a lot of comfort zones.
Yes it is.
I'd really prefer to be comfortable with my phone, it's one of the reasons I stuck with blackberry for sooooo long. Having used an iPad for so long picking up my iPhone was a logical choice. I've got enough challenges in my life vying for my time, my phone needn't be another.
You have an iPad so getting an iPhone makes sense for you. If you had a Galaxy tab would you have gone for the iPhone as well?

It took 2.3 to 4.2 to get the OS to finally be decent.

As for the rest of your post, I agree.

The rest is not directed at you btw.
Speaking of 2.3 to 4.2. Every time Android poor performance was brought up, the anti-apple herd would froth at the mouth saying Android wasn't slow, and doesn't need to improve it's UI thread. Then project butter comes along, and the anti-apple herd proclaim that Android is now almost as fast as iOS. Hmm...

I also have a Nexus 7 which made the choice even easier. :)

Good choice. The Galaxy Tab is beyond useless. The N7 however is very nice

I really dislike the n7. Tbh thought since it's my first android device I don't know if that's because of the hardware or the software.

Anyhow. Seems to me the iPhone 5 should be considered a success.

I did not say its not a success, just that there is reason to be concerned. To raise revenues by 17-odd percent and yet profit remains flat means the days of 44% gross margin are over...

Yay win for us the consumer. No more rip off profits from Apple to take it all.

Are we all consumers in this thread if not then please let us know because I cant understand why some here are defending Apples huge profits :confused::confused:

You guys got shares in Apple? They sold 47,8mil iphones rather than the expected 50mil big deal, let the investors worry about that for us as consumers we should be happy if a tech company makes less profit of us.

So who has money invest in Apple here?Anybody else even ifans should be happy that Apple is making less profit per device :)

I've kind of gotta agree with that sentiment hey.

That why the ipad remains one of my favourite Apple devices, the prices for what you get are really competitive if you consider the hardware compared to the competition.I love those retina displays. In fact in general the ipad hardware itself is flawless in my opinion with great aluminum build quality adding to its allure.

Just a pity the software is not everything i want out of a tablet.Too many restrictions.

47.8 million iPhones sold in 3 months is an achievement. No one can dispute that.

I doubt they will achieve those numbers in the next 3 months, so Apple should be proud of themselves.

Until the next iPhone is announced, the Samsung Galaxy S IV (when released) will be the top seller in the coming months.

In normal Qs they do around 25m phones, so yes that will only replicated or surpassed based on the next holiday release where we would expect the 5s.

I see Nokia also posted a $585million profit this quarter. Well done to them.

Just very sad that LG failed to deliver on the Nexus 4. Google admitted this week that no-one expected it to be such a hit (demand be so high) so large-scale production was not planned for (factory not geared-up to meet such a demand). If the Nexus 4 could have been produced to meet the demand it would have a had a substantial impact on sales figures.

The same mistake will not be repeated. The next Nexus phone will be a real threat to the top dogs, incl the Galaxy S4. Google learned a hard lesson with the current Nexus ... never dream small.

I've said it many times: Apple will have to do something drastic with iOS. It is showing its age. I work with both iOS and Android daily and iOS is becoming more and more of a pain to use.

My biggest gripe that drives me nuts is the inability to transfer files from one app to another on an iOS device (ie. no central depository for files where any app can grab it). The fact that files must be dropped into an app as opposed to a central depository makes iTunes essential in a country where Cloud Computing is too expensive. With Android I plug in a USB disk; drop the file into the central depository; and select the best app to use the file. Some apps do better jobs than others with a specific file. This is one example. The absence of live widgets and "tiles" also not good enough anymore. I want to see some information in nice graphics without tapping an icon. Apple must make iOS more alive, and give it more multi-tasking muscle (do more in the background without stopping apps from running).

The loss of Scott Forstall is a major concern. Yes, he was a pain. But so was Jobs. It is exactly these types that made Apple successful. Peace has now settled in Apple-land with the departure of Jobs and Forstall ... but is that really what Apple needed to happen? I don't think so. Those highly charged pricks brought energy and innovation.

Have Nexus devices ever sold well? They expected the very first one to challenge the iPhone and when that failed they appear to have settled to using subsequent devices to show off the latest release of the Android OS.

Some of us aspire to having the sort of money to invest offshore, but for now we can pretend we have at least. Dont mind us...
