Apple iPhone 5 unveiled

It's obviously about making the phone as thin/light as possible, but yeah i have a family member returning from the US in october so i may get them to bring one over for me, just don't wanna get screwed by not being able to have a sim...

You do realise that the US version of the iPhone 5 has different LTE frequencies?

There are 2 GSM versions and a CDMA version. The US version seems to only run 700 MHz while the international version has 850/1800/2100 MHz.

I've no doubt that it does. But it's also probable that they wouldn't release it without being able to debut a fully fledged selling point to go with it - unlike the majority of cases in Android where it's shoved in and then hoped that someone else figures out how to use it.
they could have innovated and done it themselves instead of waiting, the payment thing is still finding its feet but would get a huge boost if you could use your iphone in starbucks etc, samsung already showed its use in SBeam sharing, why doesn't Apple make their own version, put NFC chips in Ipads, Ipods, Iphones, Mac's etc for syncing devices over wifi and streaming. Instead of fiddling with passwords and wifi, one swipe and its done and connected. That's how you wow at a keynote.

iPhone 5 proves Apple leads in innovation. Some notable Apple inventions:

• Ultra-large >3.5" colour touch display allowing both left- and right-handed operation!

• Variable audio levels through both hardware and software controls!

• Runs software programs developed by both Apple as well as non-Apple developers!!

• Forward-compatible with the iPhone 6!!! (There will not be an iPhone 7.)

• Guaranteed fully compliant with software patents of most other leading manufacturers!!!

Welcome, Apple. Seriously.

I think it's brillopads myself, loved the whole event. Highlights:

1) New iPhone case design looks absolutely primo - first class hardware design through and through.
2) Sensors on the touchscreen itself, that thing will be ultra-sensitive. Pro typing.
3) New earphones are super classy - finally decent Apple buds.
4) You see the graphics that thing can push out? It's 100% console quality. View attachment 17653
5) A6 looks to be Cortex A15 based or I'm mistaken? Will destroy benchmarks. See above screenshot if you aren't convinced :p
6) Flyovers with fully texture mapped 3d buildings look very classy.
7) Proper LTE with decent battery life could be a first
8) Images on that camera look like setting a very high standard - interested to see how it compares to Lumia 920 in low light.
9) I flipped out with the new iPod Touch. The colours and the 4' screen. He reckons it's the world's top selling videogame device - maybe he's right. Makes me wonder why nobody else has even made a decent effort to break into this market with an equivalent Android device - Samsung should be shot for their attempt.
10) Sending messages directly in notifications is class.

1- it looks the same only bigger?
2 - never heard anyone complain about SG3 or iPhone4 touch screen problems - I dont think anyone will notice besides that it gives more space.
3 - Have you tried the "earpods"? how do you know they are awesome? I'll wait and see
4 - No, no it's not. Maybe the wii, sure.
5 - No complaints here, improving CPU is always good
6 - Maps are an interesting idea, hope it works well world wide and not just USA/UK
7 - Proper LTE? Others have done that already. I think the 4s should have done LTE.
8 - I don't get the fascination with it's camera... but great to see how it compares to nokia.
9 - Everyone would get sued.
10 - Yawn.

I generally don't like Blackberry devices, but I'm more excited about BB10 devices than this new iphone.

Apple not innovating anymore.

Nothing new on the iPhone 5. Technology introduced that has been on Android for well over a year already.

Meh .. Apple is playing catch-up instead of leading the pack, no wonder they're suing the world for stuff they announce now that other manufacturers had in their phones last year already.

It does not differ much from the 4 design?

I am interested to know what the reasoning behind adding this feature is. Apple have always had the best touch responsiveness. And you have to wonder if this adds a higher risk to the reliability of the device.

3) New earphones are super classy - finally decent Apple buds.
Agreed, was highly disappointed with the ones on my iPod.

4) You see the graphics that thing can push out? It's 100% console quality.
Maybe, but is it necessary? To me, it seems a bit silly to have console-level graphics on a device that small. Considering the battery drain, and no tangible benefit, it also has me questioning whether the even more sensitive screen has the reliability to match. Perhaps on an iPad I would be better convinced...

5) A6 looks to be Cortex A15 based or I'm mistaken? Will destroy benchmarks. See above screenshot if you aren't convinced :p

Benchmarks are one thing, but Apple have never needed benchmarks for vinidication. UI responsiveness is most important, I would have hoped that Apple touched on it more (if they did, then I missed it).

6) Flyovers with fully texture mapped 3d buildings look very classy.
Definitely, I was quite impressed. Definitely won't be missing Google Maps.

7) Proper LTE with decent battery life could be a first
Agreed. Given that the 5 employs a single radio chip, could be possible. But this might also cause worse battery life- constant polling etc.

8) Images on that camera look like setting a very high standard - interested to see how it compares to Lumia 920 in low light.
But will most likely be eclipsed by Sony, so no more king of the hill for them.

Samsung definitely missed the boat on this, the Galaxy Player is garbage. I really like the new iPod Touch, but they are pushing the terminology of video game console here. I love how the nano looks just like the Nokia Lumia range :p:

Also available in Jelly Bean.

Overall, whilst bringing nothing innovative to the table, Apple have done well with this. A good improvement over an already excellent product. I can understand the reasoning behind that- they ensure that they don't alienate their existing consumer base (who as mentioned before are very loyal). I think to them, that is most important. If I was an iPhone user, I would consider this a worthwhile upgrade in line with the ecosystem.

But- Nokia look to be the biggest winners here. Given that Android and iOS are doing more to polish than improve their ecosystems, they are now the ones who are impressing markets. If they can deliver on their promise, my next phone (and I am sure quite a few others will agree) will be Windows 8-based.

Don't show this to Cerebus, he will send a strongly worded letter to the author.

I could care less. It's the same things the same been saying since the iPod days. Me, I love it. I was never particularly sold on the 4s - that seemed like a pretty incremental step to me. But this thing is magnificent. That chassis... it's a masterclass of industrial design.
