Apple iPhone 5 unveiled

No ma'an.

They are going to call it the iPhone 5s.

It looks like a nice premium product but it still has Chinese / Japanese insides like all other phones.

Problem is that when they design it so solidly, it becomes extremely fragile, can't wait for a drop test. This thing like the 4s is likely to shatter when dropped at knee height.

Good read. One can almost compare Apple's design direction with the iPhone to that of Porsche with the 911. The 996, 996 & latest 993 all but look the same with the major changes being Engineered under the skin of each model, just like with the iPhone. 911 ownership is still seen as prestige, typically driven by someone exciting working for a Fortune 500 company. Everyone from brake-fluid drinking wife-beater to Fortune 500 Exec owns an iPhone and that is not necessarily a bad thing - hey, at least the iPhone is way more accessible than the 911 (or flagship Galaxy models).
The issue comes in with expectation: the brake-fluid drinking wife-beater wants to see the moon and the stars before he is tempted to go for the latest iPhone. The Fortune 500 Exec wants exactly what he has now, with more, which is why the iPhone 5 makes sense to him and hence me comparing the iPhone 5 to a expensive audiophile-class shoebox sized CD player. The brake-fluid drinking wife-beater can't give a rats ass, he's got a R100 DVD player from the Chinese shop down the road that can also play CD's. And MP3's. He can get a new R1000 Android/Bada-OS smartphone that can do, on face value, the same as the "new but the same" iPhone 5.

Not a bad analysis at all.

Agreed. I'm always fascinated by the amount of energy released on the interwebz in the days prior to an Apple event and just after and I think MG Siegler is spot-on with his "turn" and "prestige" metaphors. People's expectations are sometimes just crazy and there is no way they won't be disappointed, but as that article pointed out, just as soon as you have one of Apple's devices in your hands you get it... Well, I did at least.
There was a thread on MyBB earlier this week about what people were expecting from the event... I figured it'd be the phone and IOS6 'cos I've been watching these things for years and I'm not expecting "the prestige", a phone that doubles up as a Martian landing craft or something like that. I'm really expecting "the turn", a phone that will be better than my 4S, which I still really love and which, in turn, was better than my 4 and so on... Argue specs and dimensions all you want, throw stones at the opposing fanboy camp, whatever... Apple devices are, for me at least, more than just the some of it's parts and I pretty sure, come October, November or December when I finally get my hand on mine, I'll be "in my knoppies" thank you very much.

When you think about your iPhone, it’s probably the object that you use most in your life. It’s the product that you have with you all the time. With this unique relationship that people have with their iPhone.

Err .... actually you could say this about ANY phone out there. Get off your high horse :erm:

There is actually a huge amount of effort and change that went into this thing. Nobody is doing anything even remotely close to this kind of chassis design. It's just that so many of the changes are under the hood.

I quite like my iphone 4s and I will be getting an iphone 5 early next month(I hope i can somehow find a nano sim!) but honestly how some people make Apple their religion almost is a real put of

Its only a phone and this was just an evolution, nothing too exciting here but it is better than the 4s lets not go around idolizing it though.

Seriously now you are getting ridiculous, the iPhone is one of the most fragile devices out there and that is not a good thing for a phone that u need to carry with you all around under different conditions so don't treat it like its a piece of art. As for under the chassis is just an expected spec bump nothing mind blowing or revolutionary.

Please note that I am not in any way bashing the iPhone but stop trying to convince the world that this is the greatest device ever.

The reason iPhone 4 was fragile is because they put a glass layer around the whole thing including the back which was quite prone to shattering. This one is layered in anodized aluminium apart from the front. I'm willing to bet (just a guess) that it's much tougher than iPhone4.

For the rest of the chassis take a look at the video.. it's a different level. The only people doing anything close are Nokia.

Never said it was mindblowing or revolutionary. I said it was a major improvement.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I just think it's being pretty undervalued and the nature of the changes they made won't really be that obvious without getting hands on with it. I don't remember seeing so many iPhone fans coming out and blasting SGS3 fans when they released that phone but anyway I guess that's how it is.

FFS Porsche do not ask Mazda and QQ and other Chinese / Japanese companies to make their parts.

Apple does but they have better gift wrapping.

Man these retarded car analogies are just stupid and misleading.

Unless you can find a premium car manufacturer that uses the same parts as other ordinary cars but pretends the entire car is premium, and also sells for a premium.

Only Apple, this changes everything

Maybe that's because the S3 doesn't just have a bigger screen than the S2?
