Yes to both. Amazon takes international cards for everything. It's necessary to use a forwarding service though for something like a laptop. Amazon themselves only ship books, DVDs and Kindles internationally. Some of those that sell through Amazon might ship internationally. It's certainly the case for the UK Amazon.

Now of course Amazon might look askance at someone overseas who has never ordered from them before wanting to buy a $1000 item with an international card. But then they'd not be alone in that.

Good point. For interest's sake, UK cards are tied to your billing address. When you order something on-line, you have to type in your billing address, and if that's not correct, the transaction doesn't go through. Many, if not most on-line retailers require at least your first delivery to be to your billing address.

In some cases in the US you need your credit card number together with the ZIP code of the billing address.
 
Try Fry's if you get close to one. The Apple section is usually larger than most Apple stores minus fanbois. You can fit at least 3-4 Best Buys into a Fry's store.
