Apple Music

Apple Music is still in Beta on my Android after a year?! :wtf: Been trialling it since last month. Also moving over to Linux I have no iTunes. I concur Google Play is much better.

Google got a hold of this system when it bought context-focused music app Songza in 2014 and has been developing it ever since.

“We’ve had a long time to get good at what it takes to be good at that,” Play Music project manager and Songza founder Elias Roman said. He added about working at Google: “It’s a really complete and exciting and brilliant team. [We’ve] been very, very happy working with them.”

No other app comes close at contextually personalized recommendations.

Although Spotify is planning to do a lot more here, it has “just started investing a lot of effort in trying to understand user behaviors at different times and different contexts they’re in,” lead software engineer Edward Newett said. For now, Spotify’s main tab, called Browse, shows the same selection of playlists to everyone, with only minor adjustments for time of day.

Apple Music and others are even further behind.

I signed up for the 30day trial and want to add my itunes playlists, will it upload my entire collection to Google or will it "match" them giving me the option to get the mp3 version etc?

I dont want to upload 200gb of music naturally .

Yes it does have free scan and match. It will not upconvert your music though. So 256kbps .m4a's will be 256kbps mp3's.

Added a playlist by drag and drop, it then attempted to upload as bandwidth upload was showing full for a good 30min.
Had to remove extension to get it to stop.

Thought maybe I'll export an iTunes playlist and import into google music but it doesn't offer that support m3u or otherwise, other streaming sites all offer import and export of playlists yet not google music.

How do you get this to work? I downloaded the iOS app. Singed in > tells me to go search for google play music.

First link I get > redirects me straight to the app again
Second link > lets me sign > can't listen to nada.

So how do I trial this for 2 months?

As usual, you need a BSc CS to figure google and or android out. Tsek

It tells you there... Search for play music on Google via Safari or Chrome. Sign in and start the trial. Return to the app, hit refresh and enjoy.

EDIT: Blame Apple for that anyway --> http://www.recode.net/2016/6/30/12067578/spotify-apple-app-store-rejection

[Sigh].

So anyone using Apple Music with a large iTunes library, care to insert/activate the iCloud Status column - and have a look at what they see?

60% of my =/- 70GB library, is now marked as "Apple Music", rather than "Matched".

Which, AFAIK, means that if I unsubscribe from Apple Music, I lose access to those songs, since Apple now things they belong to them, as opposed to me... Nice.

That should only happen if you downloaded them FROM Apple Music.

Otherwise it simply means they needed to be uploaded and they couldn't be matched.

That doesn't make sense?

This from the 9to5Mac article:

"This status is assigned to songs downloaded from Apple's streaming catalog. Apple Music files are 256k AAC (m4p) files and have FairPlay copyright protection on them; if you ever cancel your Apple Music subscription, you'll lose access to playing these files."

The rest (minority) of my songs are either marked "Ineligible"; a small handful as "Purchased" ( :wtf: ); "Matched" or "Waiting" - but the vast majority now sit with "Apple Music"... Do most of yours read "Apple Music"?

Did you download them from the service or is this your original source library?

Not close to mine now but will have a look if I remember.

Did you ever use the iTunes Match service?

Would appreciate it of you could check your side, thanks.

Nope - never been a Match subscriber.

This is my original source library. That's why I'm worried.

Wrong... Apple changed it recently.

You subscribe only to Apple Music: You won’t notice much of a change. The only difference will be that new matched tracks will have an iCloud Status of Matched, rather than Apple Music, and they won’t have DRM. You can force older downloaded tracks to change their status by deleting the local copies and re-downloading them; iTunes won’t automatically do this for you. And you can play these matched tracks on any device, even one that doesn’t have an Apple Music subscription or isn’t signed into Apple Music. Note that tracks you add from Apple Music to your library still have DRM; this change only affects tracks that are matched from music you own.

Thanks for the link. That's partially good news, but I'm technically not wrong - in the sense that, as long as those tracks of mine read as "Apple Music", I won't be able to access them, were I to unsubscribe to Apple Music!

In other words, I need to get their status changed back to "Matched", rather than (as they are now) Apple Music.

So, if I understand the article correctly, 'when' my (and others) iTunes Account gets touched with the new update that they are slowly rolling out (noiselessly, and in the background), I can then re-download my tracks marked as AM, and then they will hopefully change over to "Matched", and be DRM-free? But as it stands now, 60% of my music is - for all intents and purposes - DRM'ed...

That does suck.

Maybe the library will cycle in slow time too?

That's what I'm hoping for. Backstreetboy's link refers to the new 'fingerprint' music recognition system that they're rolling out, that will hopefully sort my music from their's again, and switch things back to "Matched"...

But not a nice feeling sitting here with the bulk of my library DRM'ed.

Suffice it to say that I will be moving my TM backup of my iTunes library onto a new, separate external HDD, for safekeeping, in case I need to turn back the clock...

Bit of a schlep this.

I dont like it but for some reason spotify vouchers dont work for me & its cheaper than spot.

I'm subscribed to both matched and apple music but kept my libraries separate from day one, my main library being the matched one.

Apple's streaming music service Apple Pay has hit another milestone - it has surpassed 10 million downloads on Android. A quick look at the Play Store listing for the app now shows the total number of installs in 10M to 50M range.

For those who aren't in the know, Apple Music for Android was launched back in November last year, but it stayed in beta until last month when the Cupertino-based company finally released a stable version of the app.

The service turned a year old this June with over 15 million paid subscribers, halfway reaching Spotify’s 30 million subscribers.
