Apple must let iPhone users remove pre-installed apps, new law proposes

Apple Inc. would be prohibited under antitrust reform legislation introduced last week from giving its own apps an advantage by preventing users from removing them on Apple devices, said Democratic Representative David Cicilline, who is leading a push to pass new regulations for U.S. technology companies.

Cicilline told reporters Wednesday that a proposal prohibiting tech platforms from giving an advantage to their own products over those of competitors would mean Apple must let consumers decide which apps to use or remove.

“It would be equally easy to download the other five apps as the Apple one so they’re not using their market dominance to favor their own products and services,” the Rhode Island Democrat said.

Their pre-installed apps are ok and most are actually useful, it's not like I get any carrier or dodgy garbage. It's not like I get 5 different stores or 3 different home screen apps.

You can remove them all from the home screen but there are some apps such as safari, messages, app store, etc that you cannot completely remove. Not that I see anything wrong with that.

yeah, iOS devices already release from the factory as the cleanest experience you can find and almost all its apps can be removed these days that aren't quintessential. I always found it odd that people seem to attack this more (I do support other aspects of these kinds of bills like more third party choice) and not literal hodgepodges from Android OEMs and Windows.
 
...just don't use them. Simple. I don't use them all and couldn't be bothered if they're included in iOS.
 
Okay, but why pre-install it in the first place, just like Windows and Android phones like Samsung. There is so much bloated crap on there.
If you want to use it then download it.

Tbh I don’t really see how this affects anti-trust issues. Sure you now can pick and uninstall whatever you wish but it’s purely for an end-user.
To fix the anti-trust issues they need to go after the funding.

I would personally pick AppleTV+, News, Podcasts and Stocks, some would even half my list.

Nothing third party in, no duplicates for the same purpose, and everything else mostly essential, it's really refreshing when you come from other OEMs constantly pumping their devices unless you want to and can root.

I won't really count that as bloatware anyway, Apple make the hardware and software and provide you with the basic apps you might need, I don't see anything wrong with that. If you don't have a use for TV just remove it. Now if they pre-installed Social media apps like FB, that would be a different story.

This legislation is specifically about apps you can't remove, all of those you mention can easily be removed:

How is it antitrust when it's Apple's device that they make, and the software they create for the experience they want for the end-user.

Where were you when the business was struggling- now you want to tell me what I can or cannot do in my own business?

if the Apple stock were to plummet today, would the same people/organisations pitch in to rescue Apple? No, they’d just move on to another platform.

Politician BS with bait and switch tactics, basically implying you’d use AppleTV+ because it was pre-installed.
Instead of going after the funding, which affects all the tech bros.

If one business in the organisation is subsidising another then that business unit is being anti-competitive in the market.
It can operate at a loss until it drives competition out, effectively becoming the monopoly.
