I have the Iphone 5 and I really love the phone.

Since upgrading to IOS7.1 I have found the battery life very pathetic and I have to charge my phone via USB on my PC at work.

Now I have been doing that all the time with great results.

Now since the upgrade, it gives me that dumb error saying the cable is not supported bla bla when its the cable i got with the phone from APPLE

Any ideas?

As i have mention above, its the cable i got in a sealed box with the phone - so genuine.

If it were third party, I wouldn't have even posted this

Do you have a cover on the phone; one that could be preventing the adapter from going in all the way?

+1 for battery life taking a dive since the patch did not last the day yesterday! (To be fair day starts at 4am lol)

Nope, thought the same and took out of case. @herbertk yea i know the feeling

Somebody swapped their cable for yours?

Two more things to try:
Look at the condition of the contact strips on the end that fits into the iPhone; there have been a few reports of oxidation which can usually be corrected by lightly scraping off any of the oxidation.
Alternatively restart both the iPhone and computer with iTunes, and attempt again.

I will try clean it - very possible its dirty. PS dont use Itunes **yuck** lol

Funny enough, I have also noticed charging issues since the 7.1 update on the SO's iPad mini. Before, it used to charge when a USB extension cable was attached to the Lightning cable. Now, it refuses to charge at all.

No worries (your choice, not mine)

However, the lack of iTunes, or more specifically the Apple's USB drivers could also be a source of the problem; even though you don't use iTunes I'd recommend installing it just to ensure you have the right drivers.

Apple are well known to regularly alter their USB drivers within iOS to detect uncertified cables and cable solutions.

The reason for this tends to be dual fold: a few battery incidents (swelling / smoking / fire) are documented to have resulted from faulty cables, secondly it's to isolate certified cables from those that aren't; why you ask? Simple its to protect the customer against the previous mentioned incidents, and to ensure a consistent experience.

Some may take a position that says Apple is trying to prevent cheap cables competing with its own cable sales; whereas the counter argument is what I've covered above. You decide.

I don't mind paying for a genuine cable but if a genuine cable costs R289 then i have a problem with that thinking...

Which is also one of the main reasons as to why i decided to jump ship to Samsung, its sorry i know.

Charge controller is in the phone. The cable has little to do with batteries swelling...

Absolute nonsense. Complete charging circuit is in the phone. Charger cannot be responsible for battery swelling/smoking.

Did you upgrade OTA or do a full upgrade via iTunes?

I had a problem quite similar after an OTA update, I was losing about 10% per hour on my 5s. Connected to iTunes and downloaded the full update and did the update again via "Restore" and my battery life is now excellent, better than it's ever been.
