Apple rolls out revamped desktops

Apple on Tuesday unveiled beefed-up Macintosh desktop computers in a revamped line it touts as offering more muscle for buyers' money.

Isnt that the same price as the mini has always been - at least for the last few rev cycles?

Mine's been doing faithful, daily service, for nearly three years now making it a fairly worthwhile purchase in my books.

The missus uses it for games (Sims/Sims2/CSI etc) but for the most of the time it's doing media centre duties.

I have a first-issue MacMini (2005) that is STILL in daily use by myself at home for developing, internet stuff (email browsing etc) and DTP. It remains (mostly) rock-solid.

Of course, it would certainly enjoy retirement provided Cor(upt)e don't use this opportunity to hike Mini prices, which I suspect they will - they have before!

Could be, but 800 dollars for a mac mini seems ludicrous to me, u still need a monitor. keyboard and mouse. OSx is not worth that extra money, and unless snow leopard is something incredible, i will not be a mac user. (very sad since i love the product)

The other issue i have is the price if something goes wrong, ethernet port has an issue, replace logic board, usb ports have issue, replace logic board, graphics has issue... u get the idea.

Snow Leopard is supposed to bring additional 64bit features, they speculate it will increase current Core 2 Duo performance by 15-20%, whatever that means. The benefit however will be negligible with earlier C2D processors. The Mac Mini may use a 32bit
processor which does not take advantage of Snow Leopard.

If that really proves to be the case, I will be buying it, if not, I'll skip (the Snow Leopard upgrade).

Up the size? Then it wouldn't be as 'mini'.

5-9k for a logic board (depending on unit) is somewhat pricey....

I have a Mac Mini and I'm still contemplating getting another one. Use by staff mainly as office machine, for DTP, email etc. It just goes ... no hassles.

Now with dual displays, it will be cool to put two displays side by side. I've got so used to this with my Macbook, that it's hard to live without.

Imagine having two Samsung T260s side by side driven by a Mac Mini ... !!!

The new one is more pricey here. I don't remember the exact prices of the outgoing model - mid £300 and mid £400 respectively - but the new one is definitely a bit more. But for the better graphics and other improvements, I'm not complaining.

You can't compare an all-in-one system's board to a generic one-size-fits-all board you buy for your PC. For what it's worth, the logic board on the 17" MBP + labour is about two thirds of the price of the logic board, labour excluded, on my old HP lappy. I dropped my MacBook last year, hosing the screen. A friend of me dropped his Acer - killed the screen. Guess who paid more to have it fixed. Here's a clue: it wasn't me.

I got an old mac mini, use it as a media center, watch stuff on my tv and what not... It takes up so little space, makes no noise, has a cool remote, and looks good in the cabinet... Mac mini ROCKS!! laugh away tau1z...

I take it they're referring to the new #2 compared to the old #2.
