Apple rolls out revamped desktops

The new one is more pricey here. I don't remember the exact prices of the outgoing model - mid £300 and mid £400 respectively - but the new one is definitely a bit more. But for the better graphics and other improvements, I'm not complaining.
Due to the weak pound? As far as I can tell the US prices are still the same.

Well, these days, when you add sales tax not much less than here. I really wanted to get a MBP at the end of last year when I went there. But in all the sates I went, the shelf price plus tax came out roughly equal to the UK price.

Probably not as much to do with sales tax as the weak pound.

Anyway - who pays sales tax when they dont have to. :)
 
You can't compare an all-in-one system's board to a generic one-size-fits-all board you buy for your PC. For what it's worth, the logic board on the 17" MBP + labour is about two thirds of the price of the logic board, labour excluded, on my old HP lappy. I dropped my MacBook last year, hosing the screen. A friend of me dropped his Acer - killed the screen. Guess who paid more to have it fixed. Here's a clue: it wasn't me.

The 30% is the in display resolution. The new 24" is 1900 x 1200. That's 30% larger than the 20" 1680 x 1050 screen. Simple division (1900 x 1200) / (1680 x 1050) = 1.293 or around 30% more display area.

I got my 24" iMac in April 2007, has a 2.16 CPU.
The new one is only 2.66.

So that's 22 months.
What's up with Moore's law?

apologies about the confusion, but being an SA forum board i am using SA pricing, and whilst Core != Apple, it is the official channel (well microtek is but..). I am sure you could probably import the logic board at a cheaper cost, but that would mean installing it yourself....
And that price usually excludes labour...

I wish I could push my little Compaq lappy to 1280x1024. On that 12" 1024x768, some things just don't fit on the screen.

You mean import directly? I don't think it would work out much cheaper: The cheapest new Mac Min is $600. At today's exchange rate of R10.5/$ish, and adding in VAT, we get about R7200 (and that's without shipping + hassle of the half-wits at customs ). The mispricing is at Apple's end.

You didn't say performance or transistor count. Which is what I responded to. If the transistor count has more than doubled, then Moore's law is still going strong :)
