Apple tests next-generation M2 chips

Apple has started widespread internal testing of several new Mac models with next-generation M2 chips, according to developer logs, part of its push to make more powerful computers using homegrown processors. [Bloomberg]

iFolk : Do you think it's a matter of time before iPhone adopts M chips and ditches A series?

Do we except the M1 to fall away and this becoming a case of every couple of years we’ll see an M3, M4 etc?

Or will this be more of a tiered thing?

M1 is around 1.5 years old at this point, but still very good. A new chip is almost imminent anyway looking at other manufacturers’ cycles (AMD and Intel).

Though, unlike the other two who have to compete directly with each other for their share in the PC build market, Apple only needs to make their chips for themselves, which has its advantages, eg: not having to crank out a new, sometimes subpar CPU every year just for the sake of it, so they will probably take their time with M3, M4, etc.

Wouldn't make a ton of sense. The A series is specifically for mobile.
Well, my thinking is the sheet amount of iPhones they sell - and some sort of economies of scale by having a single chip by combining lines .

They could - for example - have started production of the M with iMacs and create a mobile version over the next year or two to debit in the iPhone 15.

Don't the iPad Pro's use the M already?
The M series already has low power consumption?

A tweak or two could make it for mobile.

You realise the design is already overlapping right?

They are already doing exactly what you are proposing except they did it the other way round.

They scaled the A-series up into the M-series.

Same way they cross pollinate to the H, S and W series.

The designs are entirely modular and share many parts as necessary.

It’s why iPhone and iPad apps can run natively on the M1 etc.

What you are proposing is exactly why Apple Silicon exists, it’s already been done.

Sauron answered you properly, and the way I think of it is that the A series is already the best that M can offer in the given power envelope. And it's presumably much cheaper to manufacture, which matters when you need it for a gazillion phones plus random other devices like Apple TV and the new overpriced display.

No, I didn't realize.

That's why I asked :)

This has been Apple’s gameplay for 10+ years in the making.

What’s going to be really interesting is what exactly they put into this AR glasses/headset thing.

This brief dropped on 9to5 yesterday. Unfortunately the actual article (WSJ) is paywalled. The comments on 9to5 are worth a gander.

From Intel to Apple silicon, here’s the successful story of the M1 Mac

Oh, so you don’t actually know much about Apple’s products. Yet you keep insisting you do. Awkward.
Well, I can you tell you about the iPhone. Not the marketing / keynotes / - but the real advantages and disadvantages. I don't fall for the same BS that you might (and do) fall for

However, when it comes to Apple future strategic decisions? I do admit - I'm not up to date, hence I don't chat about it and rather ask questions to learn.

The same as you don't see me argue iMac, iPad, MacBook etc because I don't them.

You know about the real advantages and disadvantages of products you don’t understand, and those of us who have better understanding are the ones falling for the marketing BS?

Ignorance is a superpower!

Basically, I don't fall for :

You have the best / fastest / clearest / most advanced phone in the world.

I can look and say 'oh, that's great - not as good as what is out there, but great nevertheless'

You lack the ability

No, but you are. Being stupid is like being dead, you see. Everyone else knows it but you don’t.
What do you feel you understand about the iPhone than I do?

Oh okay. That’s true. Standards.

What do you think you understand more about the iPhone? And what point do you disagree with me on?

Everything. People have tried to educate you but you are immune to facts and data.

Also I’m at an Easter party and can’t troll well at the moment, please have a good evening further.
