Apple to make NFC mainstream

Apple Inc’s long-awaited launch of tap-to-pay technology in its new iPhones and smartwatch may be the seal of approval that near-field communication technology needs to become commonplace

This is my thinking as well..

Apple will bring the "killer app" to bear that makes NFC mainstream..

In saying that, I'm not saying Apple were the first with the idea, just that the way they implement the idea will make a big push towards it becoming mainstream.

Apple's retail POS systems had been implementing NFC earlier this year, developments coming since 2010. The mobility aspect is being boosted by the latest iPhones and smartwatches.

Here is a article in May:

To snip:

If Apple really does intend to introduce an iPhone-NFC, the new EasyPay device would streamline and speed up the process of making purchases in its retail stores, something that every retailer would like to do. But even without an iPhone-NFC, the Apple stores are going to be prepared and ready for the inevitable 2015 transition to chip-and-pin credit cards and improved customer security.

The Apple POS vendors had been working hard on NFC the past 3 years.

I'm pretty sure all the contracts were already setup with major players (Amex, VISA, Mastercard etc) and all the major banks before Apple came onboard. I get the feeling that this would have taken off regardless.

Sure - all the other cellphone manufacturers and ecosystems waited for apple…

I'm saying that no one cared if Apple joined NFC or not ; work was going ahead regardless and a mobile payment would have been in place regardless of Apples choice.

However I can already see the CultOfMac headlines in a few years ...

Pretty irrelevant for the next few years here in Sunny SA..

The problem with the whole lot is that they were all individual ecosystems..

Apple will probably be the first crowd to bring all those individual setups together into a single coherent, easy-to-use system, and that will be a major push in terms of making it mainstream.

I personally am not an Apple fanboi in the slightest, but I do think that the way they bring things together is pretty damn good.

They used to make fun of NFC, now they have joined and making it mainstream

That is the Apple way...

Yes, personally I believe that they are extremely clever with this NFC announcement, only 2% in the entire global retail industry have implemented NFC into POS, Apple managed to make the entire world speak about this. Apple have the Android Fanbois by its balls, guess who is doing the marketing?
