Apple Watch thread

There you go then - my phone is always nearby because I can't load an esim.

According to Apple, LPM also disables
  • Always On display
  • Heart rate notifications for irregular rhythm, high heart rate, and low heart rate
  • Background heart rate measurements
  • Background blood oxygen measurements
  • Start workout reminder
  • Wi-Fi and cellular connections
  • Incoming phone calls and notifications when not connected to an iPhone
I'd already determined Always On is a battery killer and disabling the others through LPM didn't seem to achieve much.

Why can’t you load an eSIM?

Oh, nobody does in this country, I just grabbed a 1gb data like fro R30.
Not really a big enough deal for me to bother with. The watch is fine for delivering information but I prefer to communicate using a phone.

It’s for when I go running/cycling so that I can leave the phone behind.
I use it for the same purpose. With LTE enabled, the watch wouldn't last more than 2-3 hours at most so it's not like one would leave their phone behind for the whole day, just a couple of hours at a time.
Previously I'd always top up the charge on my watch after having been out for a long run but this past weekend, LPM was enough to extend the battery for the remainder of the day and I still received message notifications asas required, checked the time and so on. Today is another run day so I'll see how it behaves throughout today.

I have the ultra, it uses like 6-8% an hour with GPS and LTE.

Dang, that's awesome. Apple states that AW series 7 is supposed to last "up to 5 hours on workouts with GPS and LTE" but that's never been my experience. I'll upgrade to an Ultra eventually. I'm ok with having to top up the charge or using LPM for now, but eventually it'll become an issue when I go longer.

Now I understand why my 1st gen Watch’s battery still lasts more than a day even after 7 years…no LTE/GPS/eSim/or any other cool features/or anything else to drain the battery

Ok, so there's definitely an improvement as far as using LPM is concerned. Yesterday when I went running, my battery was at 89%. After 38 minutes of using an (outdoor run) workout mode (heart rate, GPS), LTE on and music playback over bluetooth, the battery was at 59%. At that point, I enabled LPM. When I went to bed at 22:00, the watch was at 38% and had only used 21% battery for the rest of the day, and I had used it with Siri for a few things, even did another 15 min strength training workout during which it tracked my heartrate. If I hadn't used it, the battery likely would have been at 20% or so.

So I followed the same routine yesterday, except I didn't enable LPM after my run which was a bit shorter than Tuesday. When I went to bed the watch was at 15%. Seems to me that low power mode does make a difference now.

Just ordered a refurbished SE, 40mm gps + cellular, for the missus From Apple (US) which should arrive around the same time we get there.

I still have my series 4 watch. And tbh I have zero intention of upgrading it. The new series watches are nice - but offer nothing that says I need them. Perfectly happy with the series 4.

I probably wouldn't have bought one just now but the price was right and they had the one she wanted in stock. $263.94 (R5000) vs R 7599 from the iStore, can't complain about that.

You know, kinda liking the always on, beats the **** out of the battery on training days, gets even worse if you enable auto night mode on wayfinder, that got turned back off quickly.

Ios10 seems to have tuned it to be less responsive in a way for transitioning into full on mode or whatever so it’s still fully readable but you have to almost be more intentionally with waking it up.

I find it mostly handy when training to check metrics as especially when running or ridding it’s not always easy to wake it up for a glance.
