It's because they deserve them.
Fundamental science cant be patented. What is being patented here is a specific implementation that achieves "wireless electricity".
There are dozens of different ways of achieving the same affect (And there are other techniques already)
There is more than a few published projects that harvest the energy for them to operate. Surveillance bugs that are swamped with energy for them to build up a charge. A radio receiver without a battery.
I don't know if Apple has anything actually new and unique. If they have, bless them. I don't mind Apple being granted the patent in their implementation (so long as it is their original work) What would happen though is that Apple would get protection for this idea of charging wireless from a 1m range and use this to despite their competitors who may implement this idea in their original and unique way.
Apple is hardly interested in the revenue they can collect from their IP, what they want to do is sell a lot of their hardware with their huge margins. They use their patents to stall their competitors.

Wonder what the distance would be? If it's like a couple of CM there's not much point really.
There are other existing implementations that also achieve 1m>

There's a rather large difference between wireless communication (being waves of different frequencies) and wireless ENERGY.
