Apple is hardly interested in the revenue they can collect from their IP, what they want to do is sell a lot of their hardware with their huge margins. They use their patents to stall their competitors.

Fundamental science cant be patented.

Mathematics is fundamental science.
Lambda Calculus is a way of expressing a certain type of mathematics problems.
Computer programs can be reduced to Lambda Calculus.
Computer programs (or software) can, and are, patented.

Therefore I can patent basic mathematical logic once I write a program. And I cannot use another implementation of the same concept (already decided in courts). The concept is what's patented.

I can make a similar argument regarding Turing machines.
