gosh, i enjoy sarcasm as much as the next anonymous forum dweller, perhaps next time i will sense your sarcastic intentions with my limited edition sarcasm detector.

anyway macattack are not contactable, phones just ring and emails go unanswered, i guess it's a sign that now is not the time to get a mac!

pcint.co.za also have good Mac pricing. R 26136 INC. VAT for the Mac Pro.

Does it really matter if they're official?

If that is a current price, it's the cheapest i've seen
but at 26k you want an official product, no good if apple won't honour the warranty because it's a grey product.

Just so you know there is no such thing as "Apple" in South Africa. There is the Core group who are the official Apple appointed distributor, and Microtek who are the Apple appointed distributor of parts.

When you take a machine in for repair, to any authorsied reseller, they will plug the the serial number of the machine into an online database which tells you 2 things.

1. is the item still under warranty (sometimes the technician will need to investigate further as the warrenty is from the day the machine was bought not when it was issued)

2. from which VAD (Valued added distributor) the machine originated.

Now what sometimes happens in South Africa, because of the grey "problem" is that the Core group wont honour warranties for machines that don't come from South Africa. However, and this is were the controversy lies, Apple machines have a international warranty and any authorised service center in the WORLD is obliged to honour that warranty, FREE OF CHARGE.

Know your rights, and don't let anyone tell you that you machine is not covered because its "grey."

*this info may have changed since I was last involved with warranties about 6 months ago.

Hey Vertigo,

thanks for that info, very interesting.
Still, taking the chance of being out of warranty seems like an unnecessary risk when spending upwards of 20k on a piece of electronic equipment... it's a pity apple chose to do business like this.

But surely pcint or whoever else won't be selling you something without any warranty? You could probably take it back to them if you had problems, however they sort those out.

i keep telling people not to buy a Mac Pro now... unless you have to. nobody listens to me though. what do i know.. im only steve job's illegitimate love child from a wild rumble-in-the-jungle trip to africa for the product (RED) iPod campaign..

oh well..

Apparently the tiff between NVidia and Intel over chipsets is going to be delaying the deployment of i7 and Nvidia's new chipset for this CPU.

So yeah, we may wait quite a while for a Nehalem based Xeon Mac Pro.
I'm not buying yet though, my Mac Pro is still fast enough. ;)

Sure, ever bought something from waynes world? they definitely did not do the warranty properly for a friends ipod....and surely u dont want to take the chance when ur forking out a good couple of k for a mac pro...

Buy official.

For a couple of K, I'd take a Mac Pro without any warranty ;).

Yeah Wayne's World is probably the worst shop in the world. Avoid at all costs.
FYI i phoned pcint - they don't sell apple anymore. So now the decision is, do i buy at those horrendous zastore prices, or wait for the so-called new model??

If possible I would suggest you hang in there for the new models. Just before the new models come out everyone (Starting with Core) will try flogg off the current versions at some pretty good deals... The resellers would aslo be close to follow.

It would be the perfect time to buy. :)

that hasn't been my experience - what usually seems to happen is that the old models stay at the same price and then suddenly disappear, replaced by the new models.

Are macattack still not responding? Its a tough call when to buy, and I always seem to get it wrong.....I would still buy from digicape and get the extended warranty through them (if ur planning to stay local for the next 3 years).
