After about 3 weeks telkom finally got back to me and said I'm in the coverage area. Now the wait for the install. Whats average install times? BTW this is in Bellville area.

It can be anything from 3 days to 3 months.....

Whoo, bad luck there buddy.
My application got processed and approved less than a day.

Called in the application 4pm on Monday, received convirmation and approval Tuesday morning 10am.

No idea what the install time is going to be like here in Nelspruit, but im going to sit on their heads for it as of next week anyway, haha.

...it gets even better!
Just now, no more than 2 minutes ago, the Technical department has approved the installation and a technician will be calling me within 24 hours to arrange an appointment within the next 10 days.

I LIKE IT!!!

Kloon, do you fall outside the ADSL footprint or did you choose to get Wimax instead of ADSL?

I am asking because I want to know if it is possible :)

Im inside footprint but my complex has no lines yet so that all option I had.

So last week they came to install but it was a total fail. No LOS due to trees blocking my way toward kanonkop. So now I'll just have to wait for Telkom to install telephone lines.

That is very strange, my outside unit looks directly into huge trees:confused:

There is a certain amount of LOS issues with regards to WiMAX...

After a very disappointing day, the tech that came to install my WiMAX yesterday could not complete the installation.
A little off-color, but im looking into the matter atm.

He showed me, the best possible signal we could get was about 65-70%. According to him, Telkom would not approve and finalize the installation if the signal quality is lower than 80%.

A bit odd and all that, but as i said, im looking into it.
There's just a slight bit of a hill between me and the tower, to the extent that the signal barely makes it over to me, but still restricts it to a certain degree.

Installing a copper line is just not an option at all for me, so i guess im buggerred if this doesnt go through.

Wish me luck then.... GAH! I hate the waiting and delays!
lol

Stupid telkom, I am currently running my WiMax on a 3bar signal until the aerial thingy is installed. The latencies are a bit higher, but it is still stable and I can still do my online gaming, so for the time being, I am Happy :D It is much better than the 3G.

Found a very helpful lady at Telkom's Cape Town headoffice who will be handling this for me.
Even she said she's never heard of any "minimum signal" rule, but will look into the matter and get it sorted.

**holds thumbs**

Unfortunately that minimum signal strength rule does exist. The guy that did my install said Telkom won't allow the install if it's below a specific dBm ie: in the red zone of the signal strength test page...

But good luck never the less...

True.
The test page has 10 bars though... red stops at 1 bar. At 2 bars it turns green.
Mine was 5-7 depending on location on the roof.

According to that tech less than 8 is unacceptable... I think he might've been high.

Been very busy at work and havent had time to follow up with Telkom since Friday... and theyre closed today, so i'll try tomorrow.
