Applying for Mauritian Passport

My mums Mauritian so can't I apply for a passport.Im confused :o :cry:

He's half right, apparently, if you intend on applying for citizenship of another country you need to first apply for retention of your SA citizenship. I don't think this is the same as holding dual passport though.

I've also got dual citizenship and asked about the requirement to apply for retention of SA citizenship at Home Affairs. It was explained to me that the easy way to work out if you need to do anything is if you've had to swear an oath to the other country. So, apparently if you apply for citizenship on grounds other than ancestral/birth rights, you will need swear allegiance to that other country. As I was claiming my foreign citizenship through birth right, this did not apply to me so I enquired no further.
 
Well,you don't need to inform them of anything, the way the law is written, you automatically lose your citizenship, by law. So, without application for retention (if applicable to you) it's considered a done deal. When/if they do catch up with you, it's not a case of, "Hey Mr so and so, you've got X days to apply for retention"...that's it, passport cancelled.

Yup. I have been looking getting US citizenship - need permission otherwise SA assumes that you have renounced your citizenship. At the moment they have no easy way of checking, but should this info become centralized and/or shared at any point (just a matter of time), your passport will become invalid. Apparently you should be granted permanent residence on the grounds of being born in SA, but you have to go through the same process as any other permanent resident. You can also apply for reinstatement of citizenship at a later point.

Is that how you gained your MU citizenship? Through birth right because your mom was born there?

If so, then the renunciation of your SA citizenship does not apply and you are fully entitled to dual citizenship. Citizenship to another country by birth rights is excluded from the loss of citizenship.

This is the same way my wife and I claimed our Mauritian citizenship, our respective parents were born there.

I need to apply for mine as well both my parents were born there I reside in Durban so doe thy men I must courier all my docs to Pretoria, do I have to ask to retain my sa citizenship?
