Did you experienced a Vodacom data throughput-stalling problem in April 2006?

V3G

I tried to connect on 3G from about 12:30, only to download email. Lost connection about 40% through download and had to switch to GPRS. Note that even on GPRS, the connection is dropped - I had to re-select send/receive 2x to finish download of 4.5mb of mail data.

3x reconnects in one session of less than 1 hr...

So, for me at least, keeping the connection open does not improve stability as suggested with a ping.

FYI, this connection was from an office block in JHB central.

I know this question has been asked before but is there anyone with this problem - loss of downlink data that isnt running a compaq/hp notebook?

This occurs (connection open, but no data transfer) when using an option quad lite 3g data card plugged into an ibm thinkpad!

P.S. I haven't ascertained as to whether I lose downlink and/or uplink data transfer...

I use two DELLS, an Inspiron 2650 and a Latitude D505. Same problem on both machines. Tried a brand new Option card (had a Novatel), same problem.

The very first time this problem occured for me was on the weekend when HSDPA went live. Id say INCOMPATIBILTY is the key word regarding this current problem.
Let's see how how fast Vodacom can get their technologies to shake hands. :(

Although these symptoms appeared for most people at the same time as the HSDPA 'launch' you must remember the HSDPA network was up and running long before the 2nd of April.

No disputing that something changed at that time, but I'm pretty sure it's not HSDPA that's causing this problem.

Any feedback from the Midrand area after last night's changes?

@internaut and zoot thxs

Just asked as this morning a "faulty" data card and sim were taken from an hp and put in a dell and it works no problems - very strange. All the people I know of with the bug so far were using hp.

Glad I am not 3G and the guys that have to work this bug out.

Since running stay live @ 15 seconds I have been running for 5 hrs 20 mins this morning without a glitch.

... that's if you don't consider gradual, albeit low, bandwidth consumption a "glitch" :D

Has Pretoria been updated? If so it's worse cause i was busy downloading a file, just now, when it just stopped. Was still uploading data but nothing downstream. Was connected for about 10 min before it happened.

Working tonight also had the disconnect problem. Using a SE V800 phone over USB on a Dell Latitude D810. Disconnected twice in the space of about 20 minutes. Located in Pretoria East (Mooikloof)

Have you tried the (potential) 'keep-alive' workaround?

Hi just want to say a big thxs to v3G for all his efforts over the past few days with this problem. As upset as I get with vodacom as long as there are ppl like him around I know the problems will be solved.

Its very rare to find someone (especially in vodacom) that will email you at 1:30 in the morning coz they think they may have a solution for you.

NB: This doesn’t mean that I wont be ranting and raving about them again tomorrow!!!

snap, the 'fix' is rolling onto the Cape Town system tonight, probably around midnight.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. (Not that I need to ask for it! :) ) As the user with the best ability to repeat the problem, we're all awaiting your verdict with baited breath...

Might be an idea to completely remove your data card and startup again to make sure you start from fresh.

This obviously applies to everyone else in Cape Town.

I will turn off its “pacemaker” later and see what happens.

I am in Langebaan tonight and have been connected for over 3 hours without a disconnect so the “pacemaker” definitely works for me.

I WANNA KILL SOMEONE RIGHT NOW. My connection just died while playing a online game, and it dropped it right before the end of a mission we were playing for almost 2 hours. ARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

V3G,

Apologies I did not do the test last night, I did the stay-alive ping again today for an hour, and I have not experience any problems sofar. For me it seems to be a temporarily solution.

Has the data helpdesk received any more calls after the rollout of the patch in Midrand and Cape Town? I really hope that the problem will be fixed by this patch.

I will continue to use the keep-alive ping method this weekend, have lots of bandwidth left since I have not been able to do a lot of work this month ;-)

If you need any more specific testing done give me shout.

Thanks for all your help, we all appreciate it.

Hi Guys

I would just like to know, Is HSDPA working or not ? According to this threat it seems that there is more problems with HSDPA then solutions ....

Just a thought.....

Hi, I'm in central Pretoria and can assure you that HSDPA is working and very stable - I'm much more impressed with HSDPA than I ever was with early 3G which I found rather buggy.:)

Bruce, What is your 3G number? Just the first 5 digits, for ex: 082-99x-xxxx.
