Looking at the various stamps on the little package, after clearing customs, it took 47 days to travel from OR Tambo to Midrand, a distance of 34.5km, which works out to a speed of 732m per Day.
Interestingly, a snail (according to Google) moves at an average speed of 47m/h. Assuming a snail moves 16 hours a day (I'll give him a few hours to rest), it would cover 752m in that time. Thusly, a snail is actually faster than SAPO!

Just got a call this morning for my ID number and a description of the item, as it is going for formal clearance.

It's an OBD adaptor with bluetooth. Since they could not understand OBD scan tool from the invoice, i said its a bluetooth dongle.
Hopefully that's all they need, lol.
 
Eish it's my first time using the Global Shopper and it has been rather frustrating thus far. The number one reason is the cryptic status updates. I never know what's going on. So far it has been three weeks from the US (1 of which was spent just lying in JHB) and there has been no progress since clearing customs on 14 Dec. It went from "Departed Operations facility – In Transit" (which I assumed meant the parcel is heading my way) to "Shipment Update - shipment received in vc cage" for the third time.

They are very busy at this time of the year and have to move a hell of a lot of parcels. As to customs, AGS have already apologised and said it is out of their hands.
VC Cage is Valuable Commodity cage and if they can't deliver in a timeous fashion it goes into this secure cage.
Departed operations facility is a good sign, you usually get your parcel pretty quickly after that.
 
Lots of my parcels got "Detained" by customs this month. Added an extra 3 weeks to the whole process.

I get that they're busy - and I really understand. I'm frustrated with the status updates and how I don't know what's going on. Instead of "Departed Operations facility – In Transit" why don't they say "Departed Operations facility - In Transit to storage facility". When it changed to "in transit" I thought it was on it's way to me and waited till 18:00 at work on Thursday expecting it to arrive.

They waiting for aramex to provide invoices and your documentation stuffs. I had same issue. But seems like aramex tracking is also really off. Customs to there facility isnt an 12min process.

Mine was there since 7th. today got notice at there facility. Got notice now for customs duties of R624 :( Strange and annoying thing is this is inconsistent. I had another package same value go through without an issue at all and no duties and this one is "klapped" with it.

Cant moan at least got exactly what I wanted.
 
I bought cosmetics to the value of $222 ... I am eagerly awaiting what thumb-sucking charge customs has for me (its been 4 weeks now).

Be prepared to fork out. You're looking at 34% to 39% for duties/VAT/excise plus a little bit extra. Cosmetics are a nightmare to import.
 
Besides the customs, does the Aramex Global Shopper also have a clearance fee?

If I remember correctly from previous imports with DHL/Fedex they charge around R500 (around there) and then the customs/duties gets put on top of that?

AGS clearance fee is 10% of your mentioned amount. Their clearance fee is R50. Customs and VAT... is another matter.

R50 Clearance Fee for AGS.
Aramex not AGS charge a R300 clearance fee but can ship batteries and items with batteries inside.

So in total I pay the shipping charge (based on weight/size) + R50 + R300 + customs and duties?
