Not all states in the US apply sales tax.

To be fair, California is on the west coast and NY on the east coast. That's an extra 2800 miles.

From my order history some Amazon parcels attracted sales tax and others did not. Perhaps it depends on from where they are shipped. I will just ask Amazon if they can not just mark my freight-forwarding address as tax-exempt.

Very true. I have a Misecu IP camera ordered via Aliexpress on 12 November 2016 that seems to have gone missing.
Sent registered post. Seller wouldn't send to Shanghai or Hong Kong, so I said, sure post it.
I am kicking myself. Should have asked it to be sent to Singapore or something.
I have opened a dispute on Aliexpress, but as it is New Year that side nothing will be done for a while.

It does work though, as I have in fact received the VAT refunded, to the CC I used for the order.

Thanks, I queried with Amazon if they could automatically mark an address as a forwarding address and therefore not even charge tax. They just replied and said that this is impossible, as they legally require the Waybill showing the destination address as they would not know what the final forwarding address is (which makes sense).

The boot was firmly on the other foot with me too. If you are getting something from New York and you are in NYC you will be charged VAT.
This I had to tell people that got off the cruise liners in Cape Town harbour (I used to work at the Mount Nelson hotel where most ended up for tea). From South Africa to South Africa and we charge VAT (and they claim back when they leave). From South Africa and delivered to the liner there is no VAT (as it is technically speaking, another country).
The law is the law and we're no different.
 
Seriously regretting signing up for AGS. I uploaded my invoice last week Thursday, and they still say awaiting invoice.

Phone them and raise the issue with them. That seems to be one of the biggest issues they have. I will make some time and also chat to their MD on Thursday (he knows about all my issues). I don't think that the current problems can be fixed quickly internally, but I found the following works effectively:
- Setting the payment to auto-pay so that shipping fees get paid as soon as they are loaded (saves time, especially due to time-difference in US)
- I upload the invoice when the overseas depot gets the shipment (most of the time the invoice is uploaded before the "Upload invoice" request is loaded)
- I then send them an email to ensure to verify the invoice and typically later that day I follow up telephonically (this is a pain, as they should really do this properly)
- Once the parcel lands here, I make sure that they have classified it correctly (as this affects customs) and if a parcel is stuck with "Clearance - Awaiting customer instruction" I make sure that they update my friggin' ID number (which they have).

Average shipment delivery time from overseas depot to my home is now 5-7 working days.
