Ah ok. Makes sense then. I assume they look at it per item and not combined then. Each item was just under R500.

JHB don't seem to work weekends, which is most irritating for us people who check parcel progress each day. (Myself included)
If you sent them a jpeg of your ID book when requested, then they have your ID on file.

Duty is usually applied on items over R400, but I have had items with value of almost R500 sail straight through.

My package is supposed to arrive tomorrow at the depot in USA.
I gave them my ID verbally over the phone..

Parcels arrived at JHB on Friday. No activity over the weekend. Go figure.

Went into custom clearance Monday afternoon and was cleared yesterday afternoon.

Logged into my profile and had 3 customs docs per package loaded. Each detailing the duties owed. Pretty slick. Charges will be levied against my account for online payment during the course of the morning and packages will be out for delivery tomorrow in CT.

Total time for delivery: 14 days total (packages from both US and CA)

No hickups or issues. Pretty damn smooth sailing.

Now that you mention it, my parcel also arrived in SA on Friday from the UK. Saturday morning the system was updated saying it went into Customs. Sunday morning at 11:00 I received a telephone call from Aramex who asked for my Identity Number.

Monday, customs was completed and they also uploaded my tax invoices, but I was still not able to make a payment. The package, however, moved to some shop & ship facility on Monday afternoon.

Tuesday morning at about 11:30 their system was updated and I could make the payment, which I did. Later the afternoon it was shipped.

It is now Wednesday, and I see it is out on delivery.

My journey began when they received it the 20th of Feb in the UK and 9 days later (hopefully) I should have it.

4th attempt worked like a charm. All of the above applied. SARS was super sticky about getting original bank-statements with a stamp. They would not accept statements via internet banking or printed in the branch and we had to print statements via Autobank (SBSA) and then have them stamped by the bank. They also required a written letter from the bank confirming that those statements really belong to me.

Since I only have electronic statements (proof of address), I printed both an Eskom statement and a CoJ statement on a color laser printer on thicker paper (looks more "official") and then got it "notarised" by HR with a nice colorful commissioner of oath stamp.

Got the confirmation from SARS this morning (a proper letter from SARS with the importers code) and have forwarded this to Aramex who have loaded it onto my profile. Caveat is: I have nothing to order right now :-(

I still have to go through all the hoops again. Attempt #2
Problem is, I have difficulty walking, and the bank is one side of town and the SARS building is the other, and while they do have easy access, it is though leafy courtyards easy on the eye and difficult to navigate with a crutch.
Oh well, I will have to pluck up the courage sometime.

Who wrote out this letter? Ta for any help!

I literally had to write my own letter (on my own letterhead) to confirm that I am really applying and also to confirm my details (F**** knows why, as all of this in the application) - like this:
To Whom It May Concern:

Affidavit: Consent of application for importers code in private capacity and Confirmation of mobile number

Dear South African Revenue Service,

As requested I would like to confirm that I, XXXXX (ID Number XXXX), am applying for an importers code to be used in my private capacity for private consumption as per submitted DA185-4A1 and DA 185.

I furthermore would like to confirm that my only means of telephonic contact is via my mobile pre-paid number, +27 83 XXXXX which is serviced via the carrier CellC. Pre-paid numbers do not have invoices or statements and the ownership of my number can be confirmed via a RICA subscriber request to CellC directly via SARS. Alternatively you can verify my SARS income-tax record for income tax number XXXX, which also has the same mobile number on record.

Should you require any further information do not hesitate to contact me directly on +27 83 XXXXX.

I also then had the letter stamped by our HR commissioner of oath (and I am sure that my "Warm regards" made all the difference when applying)

Unlike you, I have a parcel in JHB - parcel #2 of an incorrectly packed parcel #1.
Seller was very accommodating, realised his error and sent the missing bits immediately, which would have been lovely had I actually lived in New York. Unfortunately I don't, and now have to pay the R195 shipping fee again. :(

Wife had the same - ordered paints she can not get locally at $8 per paint. Package was 0.2kg and seller noticed that 2 paints were packaged wrong and then sent another parcel to replace the items. R195 shipping again - this would not be an issue if parcel-collation was an option.
