Arcade Game Project

Wow, that's REALLY awesome!

but what made you choose to make that arcade? Why didn't you want to make it like a racing one?

Thanks. :)
I used to spend a lot of time (and money) playing arcade games when I was younger, always wanted to have my own. Then my wife bought me a book of how to build your own arcade. My first attempt was a couple of years ago. Turned out ok, but made a lot of mistakes. Sold it shortly after and decided to do a proper one again later.

The racing one is next. :) Or a pinball one...

If you look at the post times you will see he was pretty flippen quick actually - he was posting a new update like every 2 hours at one stage, with major improvements

lol, no. It's been a month or two. Only decided to start uploaded pics now. I only had time to work on it some evenings and then some weekends. And a lot of time goes into painting. You have to paint, wait till it dries, then sand, then paint, wait till it dries, then sand etc etc etc. That's the only way to get a nice smooth finish. Then after the painting I used rubbing compound to get it even smoother.

May I suggest making a blog for you "build diary" RVZ? this topic interests alot of people

After google'ing for days, I just couldn't find any cool artwork to use for the arcade. I then decided to pay someone to design something for me. 2 Guys said they'll do it, but both dropped me. Then my wife said she'll do it, even though she doesn't have any designing background. She installed Photoshop on her pc and started playing around with different ideas.

I've always been a big fan of the Metal Slug series. I was able to finish Metal Slug 1, 2, 3 & X with one credit. :) So we decided to give it a Metal Slug theme. This is what she came up for the marquee.

Very well done... I have not read through the whole thread - is this purely a hobby or do you work as a carpenter/cabinet maker?

It looks utterly flawless, I'm blown away.

EDIT: how much for one of my own? ...seriously.

Thank you. Nope, just a hobby. Before starting with my first arcade cabinet, I didn't even own any tools.

Yeah, we all want to know what would it cost us for someone to build it - Unit and Screen, no PC (that would just complicate things)

and what are the costs of the materials if one is brave enough to attempt himself?

c'mon man, tell us

Awesome! Are you going to put a light behind the marquee?
Youve got me itching!! I managed to cut some blanks last night. Going to do some shaping for the sides tonight.

Well, the expensive parts are the tv and pc. So you might save a lot if you have an old tv that you can use. Since most people are buying lcd's these days, you'll easily find a cheap tv secondhand as well. But try to find a slimfit one. I bought a demo 74cm slimfit flatscreen from Hifi Corporation for R1100.

For a pc you can use an old P4. About 90% of the games will run perfectly on that, but you might have some problems running games like the Mortal Kombat series & Killer Instinct for example. I'm using a dual core 2.4ghz.

The wood is very cheap. I paid just over R400 for all the wood I used, except for the cardboard at the back. It's 16mm MDF, bought from Builders Warehouse.

The prices for the parts depends on what you want. Have a look on sites like Ultimarc and Happ, you can get entry level joysticks for a lot cheaper. There are a couple of local places as well, but you'll be lucky if you can get a reply from them. I'd rather pay more and get good service, than pay less and get no service at all. I think from all the places in South Africa I contacted, only Indoor Amusement in Cape Town responded. I went to their warehouse and bought the t-edging from them. I bought 12m for R100, still have lots left. They also had secondhand coin doors and other parts, but I decided to go for new parts. You should be able to get all the parts for around R1000 (new).

Perspex for the control panel, marquee and screen was around R300 from Maizey's.

All the brackets and screws etc. were probably around R400, from Builders Warehouse. If you only use glue, you can save a couple of hundred.

Paint & primer was around R200, also from Builders Warehouse.

Printing of the control panel and marquee art was R200.

Think that's it?

No dude... I want him to make one for me (minus screen & comp.)

If you're in Cape Town, pm me. ;)

Yup, still have to buy a light. Also still have to connect the led's from the coin door reject buttons, and player-1 & 2 buttons.

Post pics!

This is really great...

Where did you find that book?

Does that book give you intuctions to how to make all the arcade gamings?

For the racing, where are you going to find those racing games?

I'm actually interested in the Initial D one..

So now I'm busy installing xp onto the host pc when it occurred to me: I don;t actually know how to use mame. The last time I used mame was with mame32 and it only worked half the time.
Now, when I downloaded the latest version of mame it speaks of Samples and .chd files. I have a whole but load of roms. Little .rar files I got from someone. I aint got not sample files or any .chd files. Do I need these things?

Don't worry about sample files. The chd files are only needed for some of the games, most still run from the roms only. A lot of the roms were updated with the last couple of Mame releases as well, so chances are that a lot of the roms you have, won't work with the latest version of Mame. Best thing to do is to download the latest set of updated roms.
