Arcade Game Project

How did you get the artwork printed on the perspex? I think you need to start a blog :)

it's probably printed on vinyl, beneath the perspex. you can't print on perspex afaik...

For those that wanna do this but don't have the knowledge to hack a keyboard, build the controls and so on, you can get a pre-made controlers here

there is another RSA site where you can get them from too.

Don't worry about sample files. The chd files are only needed for some of the games, most still run from the roms only. A lot of the roms were updated with the last couple of Mame releases as well, so chances are that a lot of the roms you have, won't work with the latest version of Mame. Best thing to do is to download the latest set of updated roms.

Ok I downloaded a new set of roms.

How do I find specific ones tho? the names are really cryptic.
are you planning on putting all your roms on your arcade machine? or only a few favs?

What parts did you order? I think I might just do the same :)

I ordered two UltraStiks and 16 buttons in various colours. Total Cost including shipping was R1400 and some change.

Unfortunately the pc I was going to use has died. For some arb reason it will allow me to install linux onto it, nut as soon as I try to put windows onto it it bluescreens during setup, or it just freezes. So I'll go back to the original plan of using it as a smoothwall. Or something like that. So I have ordered a basic one from Esquire for R2200 incl.

I'm not going to bother with a case for the pc, I've decided to build the pc into the back of the MiniMame directly. I'll also put some external USB's into the side of the case
so I can plug in a mouse and keyboard when necessary.

Correct. Makes it easier if you ever want to use different artwork as well.

Google. ;) I think Mame also shows the rom name next to each game. No, there's way too many, and also a lot of clones. Only have my favourites on there.

The joysticks are really cheap here. They have a 2 joystick and 20 button bundle for only $40, while Ultimarc are selling a single UltraStik 360 for $60!

Is is really worth paying all the extra for the ultrastik?

Wow its incredable :O , when i try to do something like this it either 1. Falls Apart 2. Explodes 3. Doesn't fit together 4. Anything else you can possible think of going wrong...

The Ultrastik is an analog joystick, those joysticks are digital. Ultimarc also has the cheaper digital ones ones, tho no as cheap as those.
Wait. I see you also need to buy the encoder to make that bundle work with your pc.

Still cheaper tho.

Did you get the Ultrastik 360 and Ultralux buttons?

I got the 360 but with the classic buttons.I thought about the Ultralux buttons, but then you also have to buy some kind of controller to interface them into the games otherwise its a bit pointless. Didn't feel like hassling with a whole lot of led's that stay on the whole time, and since this is my first build, I don't want to get too complex with linking them to the pc.

Yeah - I see with the Ultrastik you plug the buttons into it and then into the USB port. With the other joysticks you need to put an i-pac or a encoder?

Decisions decisions...Need to some more reading up :)

latest pic of MiniMame.

The control panel is still loose, just resting on the paint and glue buckets. I will only attach that once the controls are installed and the whole shebang is painted.

Things to do:

Marque panel
Side panels on control board
Ceiling with speakers (need another router bit, broke my last one today)
Back door panel
Sand everything
Primer
Paint
Fit controls (when they arrive)
Fit speakers and marque light
Fit PC and LCD

I recon 3 weeks to completion.

On the pc side, I still have to go thru all the HyperSpin documentation, figure out which roms to put on Mame, and figure out how the emumovies thing works.
