Arcade Game Project

The finish is very rough, I can see nail/screw heads sticking out, rough woodwork.

Sorry it's probably just me, I'm anal about things like this. My dad always said if you gonna do something do it right and it kinda stuck with me for life.

That is the only part of the woodwork that is a little rough I think. I think they stick out because the joystick rests on another layer of chipboard/wood underneath. Not sure. Anyway, how else would you secure a thin top layer while allowing it to be removed again if necessary? If the joystick is mounted to the underside of that panel and not on top of a hidden panel, then I'm not sure.

It doesnt detract from the experience for me, still good to use.

I'm sorry, I also don't think that's worth what you paid. The controllers should be attached to the lid of the box and then that should hinge onto the rest of the box. The hinge should be on the narrow side of the box and a simple cupboard lock on the other side would hold it closed. Then you could get a mirror finish on the outside with sandpaper and a couple of cans of aerosol spray and a can of polyurethane spray. Then you finish the lid with either a piece of perspex or a aluminum overlay. You could either fix that on permanently with some double sided tape and silicone, or you could fix it with mirror capped screws if you think you'll need to take it off.

If you ever want new boxes there my offer still stands. I'll design and cut a new box for you. All you will need to do is sand and spray the pieces, and then move the guts over to the new boxes. You just need to pay for is the materials.

I want, I want, I want.:D

I would like a full cabinet like yours (madman/RVZ) but my place is to small. Maybe, just an arcade style controller in front of the monitor on my desk. Want my PC to have all the emulators. Mame, nes, snes, sega, the works, even playstation1/xbox1. Problem is, the controller would need to have all the buttons, sticks, etc for the respective emulators. Would that be possible? The controls for xbox are kinda complicated.

I also see that hyperspin is compatible with all the emulators. That is pretty awesome.

One question, when I checked for mame to download, There was a whole bunch of different ones. Which one must I download? I will be using windows xp and hyperspin.

Oh, some more questions. Does hyperspin have to come on straight from boot, or can it only come on when I want it too? the problem is, I will be using the pc for more then just games. Also, can hyperspin act as a front end for normal PC games?

Mame is massive, plenty of gigs. As for the version, get the latest set if you can.

Hyperspin runs like a program, you can launch it any time.

You get converters that will make the controllers compatible with the xbox. If youre talking emulators then you can just map the controls as you need them either with the software that comes with the stick or with joy2key, there is a link in the thread somewhere.

Thanks. I'm going to need some help with this. I have no idea about the electronics but I'll be able to build the actual controlller box part of it. As soon as I've built it, I'll start with the electronics. Is there anywhere that I can get the actual buttons and stuff from locally? I don't want to import. And what would be the cost of the parts? I've got about a grand to start with but can always add money as I go along. Any guide for the actual electronics?

there is no real electronics work. Its just basically plugging everything in.
You could source the micro switched and buttons locally, but as far as I know there is no good local supplier for the stick or the J-Pac.
I got mine from Ultimarc. Two Utrastiks and all the buttons cost me just over a grand in the end I think and took less than a week to get here.
Where in Joburg are you? There is a shop at East Rand Mall that sells the buttons and micro switches. They where cheaper at Ultimark tho.

I can get to East Rand Mall easily enough. What is the name of the shop? If there is no real hardcore electronics work (soldering etc) to do then I should be able to do this.

I forget the name of the place. Its next to the MacRib restaurant.

I got to thinking and remembered that you can also order the switches from Electronics123.co.za:

Micro Switches not sure about the buttons.

Awesome. I'll go check it out next weekend. I'll start as soon as I've got the buttons and can measure it up.

Its hectic tho considering you can get the switch and button for $1.95 - about R12 from ultimarc

You serious?:D

In a parking lot, I'm not wanting to buy drugs or something.

Lol, I mean the one is upstairs inside the big Joshua Door and the other one is on the otherside of the parking lot in a small building. :p

Yeah, but how much is the postage, import duties?

Well, here I am not sure because it slipped thru for me and I paid nothing. I do know that there are no import duties on spare parts and such and that could be why I didn't pay anything.
I do know that I paid nothing but vat on the spare parts I ordered for my laser's when I still had them.

Edit: I will check at work tomorrow for the invoice and then I will tell you exactly how much I ended up paying. I do remember seeing these buttons right after I got mine and thinking that they where half the price from Ultimarc.

Right, I've been looking at the hyperspin website. Busy downloading it at the moment. On Saturday I'll go and look for the buttons/stick etc at ERM. Then I'll start.
