Are these stats good or bad?

Howzit all,

I know all these things have been extensively discussed and i have read the forums, but i need a honest and theoretical answer here. This is my line specs from by router:

Is this good or bad?

Upstream Downstream
Current Rate (Kbps) 1016 8576
Max Rate (Kbps) 1124 8748
SNR Margin (dB) 10.3 6.3
Line Attenuation (dB) 16.2 41.2
Errors (Pkts) 0 0

I recently moved to a new ISP and things have gone pear shaped. Before I was getting 5-7 mbps on speedtest, now that i have moved ISP i get sometimes max 2 mbps and things seem very slow.

Now i just need some advice and ideas maybe to the reason so that i can take some sort of action.

Regards

Those stats are pretty rough - they're at the limit of stability. (this now your downstream SNR Margin, 6dB is the minimum it can be).
Personally I'd get the line pushed down to 6Mb maybe.

Downstream attenuation of 41.2 db is not great, but its not bad either. You should be able to maintain a stable sync at 8mbps with no problems. I've managed to maintain a stable sync of 10mbps on 36 db. If you do experience issues, then you should ask Telkom or your ISP (if you migrated your line) to drop the sync rate a notch, as suggested by froot.

Your results from SpeedTest probably have nothing to do with the attenuation rate. If you are maintaining a stable sync rate (i.e. you don't experience disconnects or drops) and are suffering from slow speeds, you need to look elsewhere for the problem.

It could be that your ISP simply isn't good enough, or you are being heavily shaped and/or throttled, or that the Telkom exchange you are connected to is congested.

Check my blog post for some guidelines: How to diagnose ADSL line, speed & stability problems

Hi There,
I would call them moderate and maybe drop the sync rate as already suggested.
If you think the exchange is blocked then a tracert will show that to some degree.
I would like to see the noise margin a bigger figure.
If there is any static on the line when you listen to it place a call for poor voice quality.

Regards

Tim

The trace routes are perfectly fine - no indication of congestion.
