Are TV advertisements too loud?

IN carl Sagan's book, Contact, written many, many years ago, one of the characters SR Hadden, made his fortune by inventing a TV set-top box that would automatically modulate the sound on the TV as soon as advertisements came on. Yes, the problem has been a well-recognised part of TV programming for THAT long! Decades and decades!

The combination of the amount of ads (especially on Discovery) and the loudness usually puts me off so much that I'd rather turn the tv off and watch something on my computer...
 
The real problem is that advertisers are also (big paying) customers, and they want their adverts to be noticed, so they probably pay a premium to have their advert volumes higher.

I asked that same question but nobody knows....

based on my research (wikipedia) so far, it seems you are interrupted during your viewing only to be shown how good some washing product is,
how cheap toilet rolls are at a certain shop, or some form of weird home exercising gadget :erm::confused:

While that will give you a kick, it is guaranteed to have no effect. The help desk agents have no direct means of communication with the technical guys.

Even if you are lucky enough to get to one that can speak and understand English, they are guaranteed to make an entry into the database that no-one can decipher and thus your complaint will never get addressed. ;)

Best bet would be to rent a toyi-toyi crowd, and instruct them to go and protest in front of Multichoice HQ in Randburg.

One thing though, DSTV should have ads.

That gives me time to go and get rid of the previous beer, get a new beer, slice more biltong, start the fire, turn the meat, whatever...

I actually prefer ESPN to most other channels as they have lots of ads, giving you plenty of time to take care of these essential chores. And don't you guys just love the ESPN presenters with those massive headsets? Looks so 1960 to me! The DSTV presenters all wear these little Mickey Mouse earpieces and tiny microphones... WIMPS, all of them. I mean, Kobus Wiese is enormous, surely he will look better with half a melon on each ear?

I am not sure if this is correct, but as far as I know, the are only aloud two be two decimals louder than your normal programming, Which by the way is A LOT louder.
 
They should stop this from happening and it's a big irretation to such a degree that it spoils what youre watching. Local adds are a problem they are too loud multichoice.
What you must do is give us a remote so that we can adjust the volume ourselves. If it could be done then i would mute the bloody ads!!
 
If Adverts have a higher volume than normal TV wouldn't that difference make it easier to create a device that just blocks them and replaces them with Super Mario until your show is back on ? :D

So, maybe the ads are loud so that you can hear when they're over when you're in the kitchen/lapa/garage/etc? :D

I just watch tv shows out of the times they're aired and forward through the adverts.

Yip - If i don't hear it I know it's time to head back and relax until the next time!
 
Back when I used to watch TV, I normally mute all ads anyway since they were all so annoying and loud. The ad agencies and the networks shot themselves in the foot by making the ads so obnoxious and loud now most people just shut them off. No loss there.

These days I don't watch terrestrial or satellite TV anymore.

Yeah, I keep expecting the ESPN presenters to pick up paddles and start directing aircraft! :D

Maybe they have such big headsets, so that if they get caught in the middle of a baseball/football (american) fight, they can still report it live?. :D:D
