Thought I'd share these sentiments as expressed by someone else. It fills me with hope that I am not the only one out there that thinks like this!
A reader has taken me to to task for what he called my "continued attempts to find a silver lining for every dark cloud in your column dear editor, but it also does not help to hide one's head in the sand while wearing those rose-tinted glasses." (Hmm, I wonder where I have heard that before)

There was another person some months ago, among others, who said she didn't want to read about frogs, she wanted to read serious things, like "bring back the death penalty."

What this tells me is that as South Africans we relish the superior feeling it gives us to whinge and moan about crime, service delivery, Julius Malema, corruption, the kind of talk that peppers every braai, dinner party or other social interaction.

Not that these are not serious current issues. But that someone can take issue with a bit of harmless fun that may help to life the dark clouds for a moment, tells me that we as a nation are mired in our own distaste. We enjoy bitching and many of us are intoxicated by the whine of our own voices. (So, so true!)

It is saddening to be told that a positive attitude is apathetic (YES!), and that it was apathy which led to the rise of Nazi Germany and the apartheid government (Do all you people say the same things?)

Apathy, yes I concede, played a part in those horrors of Western civilization. But having a positive attitude has never brought about anything other than upliftment of the spirit which leads to other good things.

Because I choose to look on the bright side does not mean that I approve of many things that are happening in our country.

This newspaper and the others which I edit highlight many issues which are of concern to our readers, be it crime, corruption or incompetence. But we cannot use all our available space and our time without appreciating some of the good things, having a little joy and light heartedness.

Negativity is a choice and it drags us down into a hole that is damaging to our souls.

Counting our blessings can have a positive result. If you can find no reason to be cheerful then, think of it as honouring your Creator. Watch a sunrise now and then, then get on with your day.

It is always easier to criticise than do. Maybe instead of being an armchair griper, get involved (BRAVO!). Stand for election, form or join your neighbourhood watch, attend CPF meetings, volunteer to help a charity, feed a hungry child, play your part as a citizen of this country. Most of all, use your vote. You can change this country.

I make no apology for attempting to include a bit of sunshine in this newspaper.

Many people love reading the bubble wrap moments. Keep them coming!

The thread title will be used extensively by me in future! :)

This forum is full of whine farmers.

I posted a thread about world cup numbers. All of them were positive and showed that things were looking good (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?229663-Some-SWC-numbers...). That thread has had only 84 views and not one comment. I can almost guarantee if the thread title was something along the lines of "World cup failures", it would be a red hot thread! :D

Actually I sometimes find the opposite.

After a trip to, say, Australia, and walking around safely in the middle of the city at night, driving in very safe conditions with drivers that adhere to traffic rules, etc., I sometimes get the feeling that South Africans are unreasonably optimistic !

uppers are psychoactive drugs which induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical function or both.

share the love Lance :)

what is your source? was this just published on some blog by Joe sunshine?

How long have you been living in this country? do you TRULY believe that our uneducated masses WILL EVER vote for any other party than the ANC? or will the ANC wake up one morning and go "you know what, we've been fscking up this country for years now, lets start doing the right thing?" no.... they'll continue to produce Julius Malema "hero of the people". For those of us that are educated, we all agree that Malema [and his puppets] are bad for this country, but for the uneducated masses, he is just the man to help them be rich !!! [have you ever told a child that if he does X, you'll reward him with Y ???

I have hope for our country, but only where the ANC government is not involved.

There is nothing wrong with being optimistic Lance, just remember as the afrikaners say "Daar is altyd 'n te ...."

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

What an idiotic thing to say in regards to this country.

Is false hope better than no hope?

Nope it is not. False hope is nothing but lies.

Lance's false hope: Well i got home today and noticed no crime YAY SA has very little crime that i ever see so yay i have hope because i am the whole of SA

Lance thinks mbeki was right when he said crime is not a problem, now that is what i term false hope. Straight up lying :D

I prefer a realistic outlook on our problems and not some happy clapping mbeki supporters claiming crime is not really a problem. You can ignore a problem and try see the bright side of things but that problem will still be there no matter how high your hopes go and at some point reality will kick you in the teeth.

Yeah, whiney whites annoy the hell outta me. They do fkall but complain and whine. Theyre not willing to try fix or do anything productive for their community... except sit back in their lazy boy chairs and whine. Personally I wish they would take the chicken run theyve being whining about doing for the last 15 years and piss off so those of us who actually want a future for this country can have the resources they were wasting.

I do see the irony in my post. Im a whiney white complaining about whiney whites :D

When being an Afropessimist is too optimistic.

Expecting the worst and hoping for the best isn’t an ideal recipe for living life but it is a pretty good survival mechanism for living in South Africa. The latest copy of Fast Facts from the South African Institute of Race Relations has a leading article written by John Kane-Berman (www.sairr.org.za) on “The fate of the nation”. It makes grim reading as does the article by Prof Jonathan Jansen “A country in crisis” on the second page. What Kane-Berman suggests is that we are heading for failed nation status unless we take urgent action. Jansen is equally pessimistic but suggests that the situation is not totally hopeless because ordinary, decent people can build a better culture. I wish I could agree with him but I can’t see how this can happen. Ordinary, decent people are also frightened people and are too terrified to make their voices heard. If they’re white they will be denounced as racists, if black as coconuts or they will be accused of being enemies of democracy and not fully embracing the new South Africa. Who, apart from a few thick skinned columnists, wants to put with that sort of crap?

and there, you basically have it...

so Joe Sunshine is positive on his blog vs Published documents on South African Institute of Race Relations who don't quite paint the same picture..... mmm

will finally come to realise that the acronym for the party that promised so much but delivered so little makes up the word ANarChy. Having expected the worst all along I won’t be too surprised.

unfortunately, in our country, expecting the worst, REALLY is the safest bet to go....

The title reminds me of something someone else said.

The main reason why liberals act the way they do is that they are intoxicated by the smell of their own farts since their heads are stuck up their rears in an attempt to ignore reality.

Just thought I would share that, now I will go back to lurking. :)

Not only that you whine about religion all day long it seems, so you are complaining about something you do yourself. That is the irony here not your post about whining whites :D.

In my opinion, optimism breeds action. Pessimism merely breeds more pessimism...

No! It was Jackie Sunset!

How long have you been living in this country? do you TRULY believe that our uneducated masses WILL EVER vote for any other party than the ANC?

Unfortunately you cannot dictate who others vote for, however, your single vote for the opposition makes them that small bit stronger. Your not voting at all negates that. If everyone who was going to vote for an opposition party decided not to vote as it was not worth it, what would that mean? It would mean a 100% majority for the ANC. It would mean decisions would get pushed through parliament with no opposition.

How long have you been living in this country? Did you not know this?

I complain all day long is a lie and an exaggeration... you know this, but you are not cared about being honest, just in trying to personally troll me. I voice my opinion on religion from time to time. I also write about it all the time in an attempt to educate people about the negative effects of religion. The majority of my posts in this forum are not about religion. Dude.. are you ganna grow up and stop lying anytime soon? Or is it so ingrained into your personality that you have walked into the realm of the sociopath?

Not just a pathetic pessimist but a straight up liar too. Please point out where I said there is no crime problem. Come on Mr All Talk.

It irritates me that any good news, whether it be transport developments, infrastructure upgrades and just about any "good news" in general will be bombarded by the same individuals that will straight away slam SA, the ANC and the village idiot - even if the thread has sweet fsckall to do with them.

They'll then close their pathetic rant with an "OINK" and "white genocide".

Ditto for the exact opposites of those people .... you're all as bad as each other.

and where does reality fit between those two?

Between a healthy, subjective balance between the two. Unfortunately (and understandably considering the current state of affairs) there is no balance for most people. Most have swung towards being either one of the two. In my experience, many whites have become pessimistic with no optimism - they've given up hope and are waiting for everyone else to solve the problem.

An optimist however often takes action. However there are optimists who oppose pessimism on the basis that nothing is wrong. I'm not one of those, but I do lean towards optimism.

Where would you consider yourself to be?

I do know that, and yes, i DO vote every time, and yes i DO force people around me to go and vote [not who to vote for, just to vote], but you are not seeing the big picture here, you know the saying "Poep teen donderweer" ?

"the opposition" in this country is so small, that we basically are farthing against lightning.
