What was this "big white-out"? (I only arrived in 97 so 1988 was way before my time).

Sorry for the typo.

It should be 1998.

The white-out program was spread over about eight years starting around 1996 if my memory serves me correct.
Eskom at the time boasted that they were the industry leaders in this regard.

I see people constantly trying to convince themselves that leaving/planning to leave is the right thing to do. What always baffles me is why do they not just quietly slip away, why do they always have to slam the door and kick the dog on the way out? You think if you felt so strongly about something you would be convinced and not feel the need to tell everyone else at every opportunity. Or are you guys just being nice and wanting to convince the rest of us to come with?

Personally I think I already answered that... you feel the need to come onto public forums to vent your thoughts in the hope that you will get hundreds of responses patting you on the back, saying good choice my son and making you feel good about your choice!

Just leave and let the rest of us make our own minds up... thank you for your concern but just go!

PS I am and always will be african (yes i am white!) and my soon be be born child is going to have an African middle name. These are my roots.....


PPS The biggest problem too is all the "I told you sos" never come forward and show their faces when their "predictions" are not fulfilled. And still worse these predictions never have a time scale so they always saying "it will happen soon"

I assure you that I would love to work in SA and not spend only my short holidays there.

I have property in SA and of course all my personal belongings, and seeing the degradation of services, and the high risk of becoming a victim of violent crime, is most certainly a concern for me.
I fear that if things get worse the property market will collapse and I would not then be in a position to sell up and leave, which is not my option of choice at this time.

People have the right to complain with the way things are going as it is effecting their daily lives, and everyone has their limit, and some when they they reach this limit their only option is to leave, if they have the means.

It is with a heavy heart, I have decided to give it until the 2010 WC and if things have not improved and the property value declined or remained static, then I will embark on the costly exercise of emigrating.
I too would love to stay where my roots are, South Africa, but I need to be realistic - pension age is not too far off and would hate to find myself in the dire position that those pensioners found themselves in Zim - they lost their homes, farms, and their life savings along with their pensions.

Side note : A personal dislike of mine on this forum, a lot of guys seem to feel the need to comment but say very little in those comments. One word, one phrase or short sentence answers provide nothing to an argument/discussion!

Because, simply rolling over and getting stomped on is stupid.
I am quite happy to make the noise I do - let other people feel they are not alone - and let foreign visitors get the real picture - not some smiling ANC propaganda.

Feel free to ignore me and others like me - that's your choice.
 
Ok let me change my angle then for you guys who are leaving.... what are you hoping to achieve by telling all and sundry that you are leaving and it is the best decision you have ever made?

The only predictions yet to come true are the ANC camps promises of a Utopia - with a house for all, and a chicken in every pot.

As for the rest - its here. No power, failing infrastructure, rampant crime, useless leadership, collapsing social services....

Please guys read posts properly before clicking the rely button!!

I have no problem with you staying here and making a noise Moeder... you guys seem to misread posts a lot! My issue was with guys who make made a decision to leave and then spend the rest of their time here convincing others that they are doing the right thing and staying is brain dead!

To make fence sitters realise they should, too.
Nothing worse than wasting time - like I have done for years, thinking things cannot get worse.

I would love to see all skills leave this dump, and watch it fall further - it's what the majority wanted.

And, once I have left, I will CONTINUE to make a noise - it does not stop that I am gone. I still want people to not invest here - its the right thing to do.

Why? Why would you want me to leave too? Because if we all went then your decision (and by that I do not mean YOU but those who have ,ade a decision to leave) would be justified?

Why are you not out of here yet? And don't say you can't... where there's a will there's a way.

You say you don't want to roll over and play dead but that is exactly what you are doing by running with your tail between your legs. Who is going to listen to your voice when you are sitting in Perth or Edinburgh?
