Well I have never been blind about SA. I have known for years that this was coming and you know what? The water infrastructure is next.
My g/f and I are making plans to leave here by June/ July. Once I am there, I will bring my family over. This country is exactly like the rest of Africa. That is a fact.
the people who dont get it are blind or maybe brain dead.

The waterinfrastructure is also gone.
The Vaal river is so poluted with human excrement that conservationists warn people not to swim or drink the water.

It was a strange thing to buy water 12 years ago.People would think you were stupid to buy water,because the tap water was safe.
Unfortunately the same cannot be said anymore.
Today you are stupid if you drink tap water.
The sewage works cannot "clean" the water and recirculate it,because of the power outages.
Guess where the raw sewage is going.........

It can only go two places.....either into the river(where somebody else has to drink it downriver)or into the water network.....(diluted of course)

If so, the people who will listen to me will be the small man looking for an investment opportunity, and considering Africa. Or the tourist, looking to go on holiday.
I really don't care who will listen to my voice in terms of the countries policies - I am used to no one listening while I live here.

You say you don't want to roll over and play dead but that is exactly what you are doing by running with your tail between your legs. Who is going to listen to your voice when you are sitting in Perth or Edinburgh?

You can't honestly tell me that you have not given any thought to evident risk of investing your life in South Africa - you could end up in dire straits like those pensioners in Zim - no home, savings, and no pension, or worse still witness your family raped and slain in the now common place ruthless crime.

People are being forced to leave due to the undesirable circumstances and it's natural for them vent their annoyance and frustrations along with their relief of finding a way out.

I still have that decision pending, and as said previously, in my case it would be my last resort.

The Eskom "white-out" referred to, was essentially where large numbers of White Eskom employees [across the board and a lot of them engineers] were told to get out by the new management at Eskom.

Why? Was BEE or AA even around back then?

Ok, if we are going to generalise, you guys sound like the ones who were quite happy in your comfortable lives during those times and happily sat back watching what was going on around you you not so stoked now that the tables are being turned....

As much fun as it is chatting to you guys, I can only take so much negativity for one day, so have fun bashing this coutry and generally being so constructive.

ic what you described is what I was referring to by the "white-out".
It was made clear that we should not consider careers in middle management or higher.
A friend of mine was acting I&C manager at one of the large power plants - there were rules in place regarding the maximum length of time in the acting position and when this time came, they decided to bend the existing rules and leave him as acting I&C manager because the new rules meant that that post was tagged as AA and he did not qualify. he left at that time.

For a while this worked for the new Eskom because the equipment was in a good state maintenance wise and a a good few of the technical staff I know who'd left contracted their services doing the same work as before for about three times the pay, while Eskom had a full compliment of permanent staff sitting on their butts because they either didn't know how or were to lazy.
Many of these friends that did the contracting have since left the country, so I would assume that the maintenance is not being done, or when an attempt is made more damage than good is done - see Koeberg and bolt left in turbo-generator.

The Rosherville specialist team that turbine-generators would NEVER have made the mistake we saw at Koeberg.
I hear that the electrical test department "PT&M" no longer exist - this department was staffed with highly skilled electrical technologists and engineers.

Some of us are afraid of dying a horrific unnatural death in the current unchecked crime wave if we stay.

The emigration decision is not taken lightly by most, for many reasons - it costs a small fortune and you will always end up missing family and friends, but it's a better choice for some than to expose themselves and family to danger and the risk of losing all life savings.

It is an incredibly difficult decision that SHOULDN'T be taken lightly. It can make or break you financially and emotionally if you dont plan properly.

You will but you will also find that people move on. Luckily most of my friends and family is already over or are moving this year.

Another thing...

This emigration thing is always seen as a white thing.

These days the emigration seminars are also half filled with skilled blacks and indians looking for a better life...free of crime etc.
