I am interested to hear from local Uber drivers.

How much money do you make?

Do you enjoy being an Uber driver?

Just tell us if this is a job you enjoy and maybe share some stories about it.

Pardon??

You mean uber taxi driver?

Regarding being a normal driver ... I am an uber driver.

Done research on it its not going to make you a lot unless you have more than 3 or 4 cars

I was just wondering if it could be a decent supplemental income. I cant imagine you could make a decent living being an Uber driver but for those who need a little supplemental income I was wondering if it could be a decent source of income.

Have you read some of the stories about Uber drivers?

An Uber driver once shared how much he makes. Follow the quote to see the context:
@iacvlvs - Thanks for your comprehensive reply, very helpful, really appreciate.

@ToxicBunny - I did Pdp a couple of months ago. As for the income, see picture below. I only started working on Monday 15th of December. I did a total of about 30 (the other trips shown on the pic are cancelled by riders) trips or so.
I didn't keep track of mileage and fuel, but my guestimates gives me just under 1000KM and about R2000 of fuel. I loaded about R120 airtime, but I also use it for personal calls, And calls with riders usual don't last over a minute.
Uber takes 20% of what i make, they also deduct R500 for the Iphone, not sure if this is a weekly fee or onceoff, I will find out.

Uber will make loads of bucks short term, maybe medium. Too many loopholes, prepare for a tough future.

Do you need a permit in SA to be an Uber driver? I remember reading that the WC gov was being its usually nanny state self but nationally do you need a permit or some sort of license?

You need PDP but not sure I also asked about the cape town issue but got no reply here

I did some reading and it seems that in DBN and CT you are pretty screwed but in Gauteng you need a PrDP (this replaces the PDP) which is easy enough to get; you just need a medical clearance certificate, no criminal record that involves violence or drinking and driving, you fill out the form and then pay the fee.

What is the fee? You mean to uber themselves ?
Yes cape and durbs are not playing ball and nobody here could offer any light on it

If you drive your car as a taxi remember you have insure your car for business use. An additional expense.

Many Uber Drivers I have driven with make a lot of money, work long hours. .. One drive I spoke to had to drive a tourist to Sun City.. Once he dropped off the passenger he waited 45 minutes received another passenger to drive to Pretoria

Majority of then I have spoken to say the money is in the north of Johannesburg. Night clubs etc.. Wear and tear of your vehicle,Insurance , car loan repayment, etc. Uber is the one making money long term - the R500 is for the iPhone + MTN data. They probably have an APN agreement.

It's also a risk imagine you pick up someone who wants to hijack your vehicle happen to one of the drivers. .

I am still under the impression they fleet vehicles or have to pay uber something x amount. All the drivers i have spoken to say the car belongs to their brother or sister . All cars must not be older than 3 years with full service history. Toyota Corolla can set you back R250 k brand new with a repayment of R4 - 5 grand. Still doesn't justify how they make money. Normally my trips cost R65 for 4 KM trip. The driver has to drivr 10 km to my premises. none of the drivers i spoke to have a log book or keep track hoe much millage their vehicle foes. One driver told me it cost R400 to fill up his car and makes R1200 does it over 3 days.

If you're dedicated then you can make the money

If I tip the driver I give him cash. Uber deducts 20 % of the tip automatically which is unacceptable. Cash there is no trace.. If there are no drivers in my area I call one on his mobile phone to pick me up and I request his services in his vehicle if he isn't too busy. When I told people how affordable uber is compared to meter taxis they were shocked. A meter taxi would charge R120 with Uber R65. Uber cars are roadworthy compared to meter taxis. Uber Drivers are friendly compared to meter taxis.

was fortunate to request VW UP free ride with Uber he wasn't even working for Uber. Just a casual worker working for a marketing company and only got paid R300 per day.

Wonder what the max turnover could be per car ? Anyone ?
Are you considering to become an uber driver. If you are there are no rules you can choose your times and make extra money on the side..

It's a gamble. Let's say 10 trips a day R65 - 20 % (R13) R52 x R520 x 20 working days. R10400 Short distance isn't where the money is. It's long distance.. . The drivers say they making more money than working for a metered taxi. They also take 20 %

Hi guys,

What are your thoughts on investing in a car and hiring a driver to work for Uber. Is it a worthwhile investment in Cape Town or has it become too saturated?

It's great if you want to get pulled over and impounded.
