Are you an Uber driver?

Ah yeah I see. I'm wondering what percentage a good driver would want.

I saw an article on Moneyweb that said "He is making between R4000 and R5000 in profit per vehicle per month – and that’s after petrol, vehicle finance, insurance, cellphone for his drivers – he supplies them with phones – tracking devices, maintenance, “I’m also of course paying Uber its 20% of the revenue, because Uber takes 20%.”" (link: http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-...oker-and-shareholder-in-a-large-uber-partner/)

If you have 2 or 3 cars then that's a good amount of profit for minimal work. I suppose you have to get special insurance if you're using your vehicle for commercial purposes.

Im quite happy to answer any questions you might have about being an Uber partner and Uber driver. It's still early days for me as a Partner/Driver, but I have been using Uber myself for months, gathering info and talking to LOADS of drivers about their business tricks and dodgy dealings to cheat the system.

Having your own vehicle and being the driver yourself is obviously going to yield the most profit.

There are lots of shenanigans going on with the drivers at the moment... some of the stories I've heard...

So the drivers are all registered with Uber, and wait for Uber to give them a car. One of the big issues that Uber turn a blind eye to, is that a lot of the drivers are previous taxi drivers, with connections. Lot's of them. So they use their connections to get trips, for cash, without using the app at all. This way the driver makes good money, but the owner and Uber see no $$$

Then there is the City of Cape Town who are no longer issuing Metered Taxi Permits. The problem is that if you get caught by the ghost squad, they can now not only fine you, but impound your car. So here is the thing, they drive around town looking for guys driving around slowly staring at their phone, and usually a dark skinned guy. They are nailing them in droves.

It's sad really, because it's a good system but the powers at be dont want to share the pie.

20-25%

Plenty rumours of drivers swapping out/sharing shifts with friends (who aren't registered drivers), cars being rented out to the drivers like the minibus taxi model etc

yeah but Uber are cracking down, I think they need to do a big audit or something!!!

But how do you control and audit what happens on the road? Both Uber and owners face the same problem, the second the driver is on the road, on he dictates what happens.

And yes, you could involve riders, but that's not gonna happen barring the cursory

honestly I have no idea, but if Uber want this platform to stick around then they are going to have to come up with something, and fast.

I was in an Uber this morning to get to a meeting and guess what, the vehicle had no PrDP license in the window.

When I was in PE, was expecting a guy (as per picture) to pick me up, ended up being his wife. Top driver though.

I'm not aware that they are required to have their PrDP displayed?

And given the animosity between meter taxi drivers, and Uber cars, I'm not surprised that all Uber evidence is hidden.

Hi all. I would just like to find out if anyone is wanting to invest in an uber driver? I would love to purchase my own vehicle but have been unemployed since August 2015. I would like to rub it as my own and need someone to invest for a new vehicle. I would do all the effort that is needed to earn both good money. I am 28 and seriously battling to find work. If anyone would consider please let me know. I have done some homework on this. Kind regards. Gavin

Being an Uber driver in Sa is a risky business, traditional metered taxis are taking the law into their own hands to protect "their" market share. Was wondering how lucrative it may be then I thought faq that I don't want to die.

No. Doubt that its going to be profitable at all. the requirements are a sedan type car 2006 model or newer. If you take the costs of running say average 2012 Toyota Advanced or whatever, costing ±R200k. Per kilometer its running now at probably R4/km(commercial use even more). Friends of mine recently went to Sandton from BOksburg. Getting charged R100 per person or something like that. 50km trip. They were 3, so thats quite profitable. But hitting the 1 person won't make you money. Thats why weekends to nightclubs in the north would work. Mostly you'll have 1 person during the week and your car will be running at a loss. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong, just how I see it.

This is not unique to SA. It's happening all over the globe where Uber operates.

Does the car have markings etc to indicate its an Uber? Anyone in? We get a couple of bigger guys(MMA, Kickboxing etc or smaller even) together, go to the local airport with the metered taxis and let them try their stuff. :D

Except in Sa the chance of you being murdered as a result of the dispute is much higher.
Wanted to ask, is smoking allowed in uber cars?
By drivers or passengers?
Doubt it, smoking in the workplace is banned but I'm sure the rules can be bent.

Anybody know for sure, regarding the smoking, as I asked and was told not possible, but regards to ecigs?

I'm sure you can ask. Remember if you happen to mess the car up, Uber charges you extra if I remember.
Not asking for me, but for my dad, who I wanted to sign up to uber,

He's a pack a day smoker, and with ecigs and regular ciggs, can he smoke?

Few uber guys said no, few said maybe,
Wanted to ask here.

Really? He can't sit through a single car ride without lighting up?
