Are you an Uber driver?

Hi guys,

What are your thoughts on investing in a car and hiring a driver to work for Uber. Is it a worthwhile investment in Cape Town or has it become too saturated?

A lot of the drivers that I've spoken to don't own the car - It's owned by an entrepreneur that buys 5+ cars, hands them to Uber, and then Uber finds him a driver.

The split is generally as follows;

Uber: 20%
Vehicle owner: 60%
Driver: 20%

The owner covers all expenses related to the vehicle. That is, wear and tear, tyres, brakes, fuel, insurance, everything.

The drivers do about R3000 per night in the busy areas ( Fourways, Sandton, etc ) and of that, they take R600 plus tips. There are also incentives for getting a high rating paid every 2 weeks or something.

So, buying a car and getting a good driver, you could score R1600+ per day, minus fuel and other costs.

Most of the drivers I've chatted with say the same thing, they share the car between 2 or 3 people and they operate on shifts. Also most of them had been with uber for more than a year. So I would assume they are making money, otherwise they would have moved onto different jobs by now.

This was my experience too with my recent Gauteng trip; just used Uber to get around.

Anyone have some real statistics on distance traveled and amounts made. I', also looking for interesting investments, but the depreciation and maintenance seems to me that it would take most of the profits.

Anyone have a car?

I have done a bit of reading on this and it seems like most people make a bit of bucks. +/- R5000 profit per vehicle.

Wondering if you can use just one or two vehicles? Then if it is a massive flop its not a big deal. SO needs a new car. If it works out then could expand or make some extra $.

There is no tipping.

That fuel is a heavy cost.

As a driver owner, you get R10,000pm after your fuel
As a driver, you get around R6,000pm (doesn't need to pay anything else)
As a owner, you get around R4,000pm after you fuel

But those services and maintenance on the vehicle creep up on you and eat into your profit. You may go 2 or 3 months with 100% profit, then the 4th you needs tyres. Two months after that, you need brakes , then a service. Then something unexpected goes wrong.

So of your almost R50,000 profit per annum on a single car, you'll end up buying a set of tyres and having 2 or 3 services eradicating 10-15% of that profit.

Any age limits on drivers?

Also can you only use x car models?
Hatchbacks not allowed whatsoever?

Very interested in getting my dad to do this, did taxi work overseas and loves driving

So what are the minimum hours required? How much could you really make if you moonlighted say every other evening for 2 hours?

Say 8 hours a week in the evening or only on weekends?

I mean if you already have a car bought and paid for you don't really have that cost holding you back.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.. but can anybody tell me if it is possible to hail Uber taxis from Pretoria North at 11-12pm tonight.. I want to go to a bar off Zambezi but don't wanna get stuck trying to get an Uber back home again.

Just download the app. I am sure there will be uber drivers out

Just checked on the app.. and it seems like there are no uber drivers in that area... was just wanting to check with any forumites that may be from that area and can say whether it's possible to get an uber at that time in that area.

There was a chat on 702 warning people about exorbitant fees during festive season, so just confirm before you use them

That is silly. Uber tells you the estimated rate up front and when you are in surcharge times. There is no big surprises with them.

He didn't say that they would charge more than they quoted, he said that you should check the cost as their prices shot up during peak times, and if you don't know that that is what Uber does, then you must have been living under a rock.

Did you find out anything? I'm wondering if this could be a good source of passive income.

No age limit, but you need a valid PDP and license.
No hatchbacks are allowed.

Uber Gauteng is currently closed for new cars to added.

The income can be decent if you're an owner driver, but for an owner it's not spectacular.
If you do decide to do it, and you're able to register, research the car you use, and then research it again; for example, Toyota Corolla's go through brakes quite quickly, and it's a major expense.

One note since this thread is asking about Uber.

Your business is dictated by your driver. A sharp driver, apart from being a good driver, knows how to operate, knows when to head for certain areas, knows when to be on the road etc.

Ultimately, it's that ability that determines how much you make; the fact that you own the car and pay the driver doesn't change the fact that the person behind the steering wheel is your biggest asset/liabilty.

Ah yeah I see. I'm wondering what percentage a good driver would want.

I saw an article on Moneyweb that said "He is making between R4000 and R5000 in profit per vehicle per month – and that’s after petrol, vehicle finance, insurance, cellphone for his drivers – he supplies them with phones – tracking devices, maintenance, “I’m also of course paying Uber its 20% of the revenue, because Uber takes 20%.”" (link: http://www.moneyweb.co.za/moneyweb-...oker-and-shareholder-in-a-large-uber-partner/)

If you have 2 or 3 cars then that's a good amount of profit for minimal work. I suppose you have to get special insurance if you're using your vehicle for commercial purposes.
