If you go volunteer a bit at an animal shelter-the odd Saturday or whatever-I can almost guarantee you'll start to be happy. Kitties & pups should do it for most folks. Let us know if it works out. Seriously.

I need to give this one a go, actually.

"Happy" is a fleeting thing, subjective at best.

How many of you can say that you are happy? I've been waiting for that feeling for long now, even moved to a new country, better money etc, everything I have and have accomplished should make me happy, but never do I get that feeling of waking up and just be like ah things feel good, instead everyday is just the same old sh** and not much motivation every morning when you wake up because you always know what lies ahead through out the day. Everyday I am just living on hope that I can find or do something that give me that "feel good" feeling. Four years ago it was my dream to be where I am now, and I am close to achieving my goals that I set for myself and yet I can't say I am feeling any better to what I did 4 years ago.

So what makes you happy?

Not suffering from depression maybe?
I think it possibly has something to do with the guy's location maybe?? Germans are not the friendliest of people if memory serves me right. They walk around with long faces and hardly greet anyone. Could be rubbing off on him

Maybe try and find joy in the little things and hold on to those moments

Ja Germans are a bit different but from what I gather it was the same before moving to Germany.

Happiness happens when: What you have to do and what you want to do is the same thing.

Retirement was thrust onto me very unexpectedly by the major supplier of my business. I decided to call it a day when they pulled the plug on me by announcing that they would be supplying my major customers directly. Very fortunately my sons are very good money traders and invested my money wisely over the years.
With great trepidation I faced the prospect of being idle but with SOs support and new found interests, I was soon as busy as a bee.
I plan my days well in advance and get quite a kick when all intentions are achieved.
Adding to this is a great circle of friends who band together for joint projects: Combined DIY projects, golf, community services, animal welfare and excursions.

I don't think Germans are unfriendly people in general, after being here for 6 months, I think they just get sick of the amount of foreigners that come into the country and can't speak the language and then try sponge of their social system, I am dealing with German customers on a daily basis, and they are always friendly with me, and they always try to speak English with me. It's only really the older generations that are uptight.

Also yes I moved to Germany in hope to find "happiness", but it was more for the sake of gaining more experience getting better at what I do, better money etc, and ofcourse the quality of life here is alot more stress free. To be able to feel safe every night and walk in the streets at 2 a.m is really the best thing ever.

achieving my goals that I set for myself and yet I can't say I am feeling any better to what I did 4 years ago.

Congratulations on this though, that is amazing. Although some people would say if they were to be in your position right now they'd love it and actually " be happy ", but isn't that always the way ? The grass does seem greener and the human drive to get more, get better .. etc doesn't help because if it doesn't cause a consistent unfulfilled feeling it makes a dissapointed feeling of goals that were never achieved.

If I were you i'd look for the biggest thing I want to achieve right NOW other than 4 years ago. I bet that'd make me really happy.

Often happiness is found when making other happy.

This is good advice, heard it many times. Yet to try it.

Can't even remember the last time I felt happiness or sadness, for that matter.

So what makes you happy?

Personally I found it a big anti-climax to achieve my goals of five years ago. I guess its about the glow of achieving, which doesn't last long. Then its the next big thing I suppose?

Perhaps its spiritual enlightenment? I'm personally now pondering my existence... let me know when you find out the answer to life...

I am mostly happy, although some people here label me as negative. I am not negative, I am just irritated and disgusted about certain things in this country, and the way some people behave and the government irritates me to no end. My posts get perceived as negative, they are negative, in a sense that I am gatvol, but that does not detract from my level of happiness.

I am quite happy, especially with meeting some awesome people on this forum. Unfortunately in any community you will find the 3-4 odd ones who will shout insults and actively try and goad you into an argument/flamefest or into mis-stepping to earn yourself an infraction.

A simple formula that works for me in this country:

1) Don't read the news or listen to the news on the radio. That way your mind gets kept clean of the ANC propaganda. This also means keeping away from SABC channels.
2) Travel often, see other countries, if you can
3) Befriend people overseas via the power of the internet
4) Keep your family close, spend a lot of time with them
5) Keep calm and watch anime, play games on your XBOX/PS3/whatever
6) Get rid of your DSTV subscription, instead spend the money on uncapped internet or a steam subscription.
