If I maintain a limited lifestyle without any major setbacks, I can cruise carefully to the end, but I suspect the last few years will be more like hovering on the brink of financial distress.

My aim is to maintain a constantly low expenditure rate and
to optimise my general resource and energy usage:

- optimal eating habits (no overeating or wasting of food)
- optimise garden irrigation (no wasting of water)
- invest in solar panels
- redesign home lighting for maximum efficiency
- maintain my vehicle well
- drive to conserve (slower speed)
- limit services: NO TV and ADSL ON
- stop buying printed newspapers - read online only

Maybe I can make it, if I stick to the plan.

I don't need much more than about 14 - 20 books, some clothing and a few games per year. :)

Fortunately I don't have many social expenditures, living pretty much a solo activity lifestyle.

So basically, you're screwed.

I wouldnt cut off adsl to save money, having adsl saves me money + time. There will always be expenses, the best plan is to just make more money instead.

Agree there. I dont have DSTV, and the only reason I have a TV is for when my father comes over and wants to watch sport. I save much more with my ADSL than I do without it.

Well we live together, so I drive everywhere. Anyway, she deserves it, just finished her degree, doing honours/masters etc. Plus, I'll be able to send her on errands! :D

It's a long term investment, if she has her masters degree in the right field soon she will be buying you cars.

Just make sure she doesn't decide to do her PHD afterwards :D I know all about that. Not that I mind and I want my wife to do it. But it is really hard financially

Wish I could be in your shoes! Hoping to pay off g/f's car in next 18 months, leaving the 2-yr old bond to beat into submission

Just make sure the car is in your name please. That way when she dumps your ass you don't lose the entire thing. Sorry to sound cynicle. If it was your wife then I wouldn't have a problem really...

How about putting that money into the bond instead and leaving the g/f to fend for herself? Duuuuuudes

Seriously

Either marry them or prepare to have your nutsack handed to you

Yes Yes Yes I know how cynicle I might be but I've seen too many guys lose so much and then sit there with their own financial issues. Like me... still paying for the mistakes of the past. The only trustworthy person you have is yourself. I'd go as far as to say even marriage won't stop that but marriage is one up to the fact of just having a g/f

BTW, before you guys forget, if you live together for more than x number of years you can be deemed as married by courts so if she leaves you and takes that car with her you can sue her.
