I want to know what YOU think are signs that genocide(in whatever country) is about to occur.

When a minority is forcefully removed from holding political office, or any other positions of authority, from government positions to teaching posts to being denied access to protection from the law.

Germany, Rwanda, Burundi, Yugoslavia etc dont count as examples, anti-semitism was rife in many countries in the late 20's and 30's that culminated in Germany , the rest had long histories of ethnic violence often encouraged by the colonial powers that culminated years later, and Yoguslavia had issues of ethnic violence and seperatism predating WW2.

So to clarify, for you indications would be;

• official government sanctioned discrimination and removal of human rights
• a relatively long history of ethnic or racial conflict

IMHO the signs are :

* Racist statements by leaders of the ruling party
* Members of the ruling party ignoring the rule of law
* Excessive security/intelligence emphasis in a country not at war
* Media suppression
* Military/paramilitary activity

All of these were present in places like Germany and Serbia.

De-humanizing a particular minority seems to also apparently indicate a threat (referring to JM and JZ singing about killing people and the gov stepping in to protect them when they are taken to task...)

The categorization of certain crimes being shuffled (police person told me they were ordered to do this, if a white girl is raped by a non white person it is classified as indecent assault, when a black woman is raped by any person it goes through as rape.)

See with the exception of the Nazi's that had a major part of the country supporting them in most cases of genocide you have fringe groups that operate in silent approval from governments (plausible deniability) so it's always hard to point at a government in this regard.


Oh and lets not forget the military training given to ANCYL members. Why would they need this under nomal circumstances? They are supposed to be a political group no?

Actually, no. The actual genocide, as in mass killings only started much later, when the war started going badly for Germany. But the Kristallnacht was definitely a clear indicator. Point is there was a clear indication then, but something similar hasn't happened here yet.

Kristallnacht happened in 1938. Concentration camps were built as early as 1933, with the distinct purpose of separating the Jewish population and working towards the Final Solution. The mass killings started in 1939 (possibly even before then), the same year the war started. By the time the war started going south for Germany in 1942, the six big exterminations camps were already in full swing.

Ordered by who? I've mailed SAPS this thread with this post. I'd be interested to see what the response is.
