ARGH CPU upgrade dilemma advice!!

Brand spanking new still in the little green box and all. I love the forums :D

And my gfx card cost me r1100 also brand new from Gumtree.

Ya i am thinking i7 but it is more than i want to spend, mobo is like 2.5k cpu 2.5k and memory 1k.

Rather buy amd and put the saving towards a good vga card.
 
Now of course nobody has a bloody 965 in stock and when i get it in my head i am buying stuff i want it now, not 2 weeks from now :(

O well will just hope sybaritic are telling the truth when they say they have one in stock.

Wish I'd waited when I was upgrading last November. Less than 2 months later and the 955BE was almost R1K cheaper. Ofcourse one could apply that indefinitely and never upgrade while waiting for pricing to drop.

There are a number of things out of stock right now that have an ETA of start of Feb. I guess this is as an effect of the distributors closing over the December period.

Weeeeellll......i have a feeling you're going to find out that the cpu isn't what's choking up that game. I was running rock solid with an e7200 before.

Yea but a e7200 is far better than a amd x2 240.

There is no ways my gpu is holding it back 9800gx2, 3 gb memory could be the cheap mobo but i got a feeling that x2 amd cpu is not feeding the vga very well and limiting it very badly.

LOL is that the CPU that still has pins? maybe its about time you upgraded to LGA775, I've learnt it only hearts your wallet in the long run sticking with outdated tech

Ahhh, is that what defines modern tech. That's incredible. Is this an Intel selling point? Like a fork without teeth.

Ever seen what happens to those pinless sockets when overclocked?

Also wise advice going from a new socket (AM3) to an older one (775). Do you still recommend carbs for improving fuel injected vehicles?

Dude i have a q9550 which i use for my office work.

I had to buy cheap when i bought my gaming pc, pins are not that bad. Meaning i ended up with a bottom of the range amd cpu. Very bad mistake on my behalf but when you only have 1k for a cpu and mobo you are kinda limited :D.

965 is actually a better/on par cpu than the i5 from what i have seen so i am not sure how out dated it can be if the i5 750 is on par with it. As rift says i am not about to go buy lga 775, do i have stupid on my forehead or what? I would buy i3/i5/i7 not old tech.

Killadoob Its not the fact that it had pins (AFAIK it was the last socket before LGA775 which has the pins on the mobo) that I'm stating its out date technology (the cpu itself, not the pins), you should move up now before they start ripping you off more, I would think a 965 mobo also has AGP (2x to 3x over priced ) and DDR1 ram (2X over priced) so you going to be paying through your know nosed, The quad core extreme beats the i5 AFAIK (if you can't afford it now, then just buy a cheaper CPU, there is quite a range and buy it when you can) LGA775 isn't that old, its current

Maybe the quadcore extreme does beat the i5 but at what price? Still not sure it beats i5 but yea buying lga755 is kinda silly right now specially with i3's release.

Lga775 is old tech now.
