Our country's economy can ill afford the waste of productive time. It really doesn't take that long to vote, for instance I could easily vote after work...

That is debatable... some stuff still does get done, now even less will get done because they're all off to vote for their favourite ANC politician to run the local council further into the ground.
No one is forcing you to take the day off...
I work in Joburg CBD and live in Centurion and by the time I get home it's normally after 6 - 7 pm due to the traffic. Can you imagine having to queue to vote after having spent two hours in traffic?
Therefore I welcome this public holiday with open arms.

No, but they are forcing us to give our staff the day off. That represents a significant daily loss to us, because we still have to pay staff, but we have no income for that day. Lost orders, less time in the week to fulfill other orders, etc. It all adds up. We will probably lose all in all anywhere from 20K to 100K that week. Multiply that by all the business in SA?
