Article: 18 May a public holiday

Well those who read it as 18 March are not paying attention... as usual.
 
Have to admit that this could've been done on a Saturday.
Seems really weird to have it on a Wednesday.
Plus I'm working night shifts then - gonna be half asleep - there'd better be enough spacing between the party's as I don't wanna get my vote wrong!
 
Yes, could have been done very easily on a weekend. If the voters were prepared to register on weekends and did so, they can surely make a plan to do the actual vote on a weekend, thereby ensuring minimal disruption to the economy.

Anyway, why don' they just have a poll on MyBB and then we can vote while at work. :D

But I agree. middle of the month weekend would have worked for me.

LOL! Are you even listening to yourself? I need to justify the fact that I work long and hard for a company that looks after me to people whose jobs are on the line? Now you're just trolling for the sake of wanting to be right.

If a company wants to get rid of someone, then they will. Obviously a public holiday may give them one more excuse to do so. My gf is a labour consultant btw, so I've heard of all the dirty tricks that some of these scumbags pull to try and get rid of employees.

So what, I know of even more dirty tactics from my own experience.

A company looking after its staff... pffft tell me another fairytale... You work for them, you deliver a service. They pay you for the work you do. They are not Mum and Dad.

Look, buddy... you don't have to justify the fact that you are going to enjoy a day off. It's kinda obvious that everyone will... including me.
But attacking me for saying that this is going to have a bad effect on the economy and other people's jobs? Well, you can expect a response on that.
It's not about companies WANTING to get rid of people or LOOKING for an excuse. They don't want to get rid of anybody, they want to stay in business.
We already lose enough days in the year to all the stupid pointless public holidays, why couldn't they use one of those for the voting?

As a side note.. I work for a company that has resisted the urge to go have everything MADE IN CHINA. One day of production, in sy moer in... thanks to this election being turned into a public holiday! How does that make us at the top feel, who are trying to keep the company going in very rough seas? You can draw your own conclusions!
Any comments that I am incompetent/bad manager/p1sspoor businessman, etc will be reported! Play the ball, not the man!

Gary this is going to be my last post in this thread, but I don't appreciate you putting words into my mouth. At no point did I say that I have an issue with working hard, I said that I don't mind doing so because I'm well looked after. My employer therefore doesn't mind that I have a day off. Our work is delivery-based, not time-based - so 8 hours a day is meaningless anyway because some weeks some weeks may be 40 hours, and some may be 60. This is why I said that you cannot compare your point of view across industries.

As for getting their knickers in a knot, go back to the first page and see who was the first person to moan over this holiday.

I have found that on public holidays the malls are chock-a-block full. This means people are consuming stuff. Stuff other people produce. But if they are unable to buy the stuff to consume, then the producers will have noone to produce for. All I am saying is that its a circle and if noone had any time off to buy things, what would you be producing for?
