Article: 18 May a public holiday

Umm ....... an election is always a public holiday, in order to allow people time to vote. It has been this way for a long time now.

You would swear the Pres just invented this for the first time :rolleyes:

What do you suggest? People get home at 7, have a quick bite, go start queuing for 4-5 hours, get home at 2am, leave for work at 6am and report for duty at 8am?

All major elections are public holidays, and always have been. You could have planned for this well in advance, instead of frothing at the mouth at the last minute. Use the time off and go vote man.

The only person who is frothing at the mouth is you! :D There are plenty of ways of doing it, have a half day off, allow for voting closer to your place of employment, have voting over two days, do it on the weekend, etc. etc.
And I dunno where you live, but 4 to 5 hours to vote? Seriously? :rolleyes: Loss of productive income may not be a big issue to you.... but it is to the people who pay your salary (that is if you have a job). Just be glad that your employer is not on the borderline like many others in this country and can absorb the loss or you might find yourself out on your ear with no prospect of finding other work. ;)

Nobody wants to spend their weekend queuing to vote, that's one reason to have a day off. Half a day off could work too, I suppose.

As for my job, yes I'm fairly secure in it, and I don't work for a bunch of scrooges who cannot plan for something in advance :P

If you were my employee with your attitude you wouldn't have to worry about it. You would have been in the unemployment queue a long time ago! ;)

I was actually complimenting my employer, so yeah, I guess it's a good thing I don't work for people like you. You make it sound like I'm missing out on something special by not being employed by you :D

It should have been on the 21/22 May (Sat/Sun).

Much less of an impact on our economy.

A mid-week holiday is extremely disruptive to the workplace, especially in the manufacturing environment.

I work in Joburg CBD and live in Centurion and by the time I get home it's normally after 6 - 7 pm due to the traffic. Can you imagine having to queue to vote after having spent two hours in traffic?

No, I'm saying that I don't wanna work for someone who sees me as one of his little minions, maximising every second of every working day and then puts up a stink for one day off because he lacked the foresight to plan for a known holiday. All the while he's out playing golf with his peers.

Trust me I work my ass off and get sh*t done, unlike those who pitch up at work just to show face for 8 hours a day. I also often do more than normal amounts of overtime. But I don't mind because I have an understanding employer who won't kick up a fuss over an extra day because it has already been planned for, I get to work flexi hours, and a host of other benefits.

Look after your employees and they will look after you. Treat them like slaves and they will eventually turn on you. Employment is a two way relationship dude - not everybody sees it as you do where the master gets to control everything, and the slave must be happy with what he has. Thank goodness not everybody does business the way you do.
 
You have no idea who I am or how I treat our workers. You are the one who crapped all over me because I said that day would be a waste. Seems like you have a massive chip on your shoulder about work and your relationships there. It tells us more about you despite all your protestations. How were we supposed to plan for a day off, when they only announced it would be a public holiday today? How were we supposed to know what day it would be when they only announced the date a few weeks ago? So we knew there would be a local election this year... that's about it. All we could do at that stage was know it would be one day less productivity. This has nothing to do with foresight or planning.... I'm just voicing my concern like others have in this same forum that it always has a knock-on effect in the economy, yet you choose to single me out to offload all your work-related frustrations and hang-ups. Go talk to your shrink about it, not me. I'm too expensive for you. ;)

I deal with customers every day who are border line. They thank God that they got one more job to carry them through. They know that one slight setback can break them and put their families out on the street. Those are the people I am concerned for. But all you are concerned about is your stupid golf game or braai. Pathetic.

You knew that there would be a local election, and it falls in May as it always does. The date may have been announce this year only, but you knew there would be a public holiday in May.

Anyway Gary you have your way of doing things and others have theirs. One way is not more right than the other, yet you're just trying to push your way as if all industries operate in the same way. I couldn't give a toss about golf games or braais, I'm actually going to vote instead of sitting on my ass and moaning about the state of the country on these boards. I work hard enough and I don't need to justify anything to you or anyone else.
 
Why don't you try to justify it to the people who's jobs are on the line?

I understand the concerns here about it being disruptive to the workplace and all that!!! BUT ITS A PUBLIC HOLIDAY!!! YAYYYY!!!!

Pitty I cant sleep late....planning on getting up real early so I dont have to q that long to vote!
 
I am sorry but I am with Garyvdh on this one. This kind of thread sorts the business owners/managers/directors from the rest who are just employees, some of which come across as quite reluctant to work I might add... Nonetheless I digress...

They make the voter registration on a weekend... they can surely run the election on a weekend. Simple as that! That's all I have to say, there's no further justification.
We will also run a loss on that day, something we can literally ill afford, then when increase time comes and its less than expected they want to take us on with the unions.
You just can't win in Africa....

Nope - though interestingly enough.
When I dropped a friend off at work this morning, she thought the notice at her office was for 18 March.
She was going off about a nice extra long weekend - dampened her spirits when I told her it was in May :D
