You could always switch to tax-free drugs.

I don't have any inherent problem with taxing recreational drugs like alcohol and tobacco. They're not necessities. People can choose not to use them and if people are going to continue to use them it is better to get additional tax revenue through them rather than raising normal income tax. Now all the government needs to do is get other recreational drugs into the tax net.
 
a bottle of wine (750ml) will go up by 12c
a bottle of beer or cider (340ml) will increase by 6.5c.

well that's not so bad

Tax on cigarettes would increase by 16.1 percent which is an effective R1.24 for a box of 20 cigarettes.

All this means is that the poor alcoholics will spend less on their families...
 
So this is what happens with daft laws like this:

1) Guavamunt raises taxes on alcohol and tobacco.
2) The biggest consumers of booze and smokes is lower middle to lower income earners
3) Those people now pay more on their smokes and booze and less on other items
4) Non of them stop smoking or drinking as its part of the few pleasures they have in live.
5) The economy is worse off for it.
 
Wiz, it won't stop alcoholics but it will stop casual, social drinkers - the guys who watch the soccer game while pissed then when their team loses take out the broken bottles and stab each other senseless. That will already reduce the burden on health - we lose millions each year on putting these people together. Not to mention people who drink and drive. More expensive cigarettes? More people will find it more attractive to quit. Less lung cancer and emphysema, less childhood asthma. Less time lost from work and fewer hospitalisations and medical costs. The economy won't be the worse for it.

Kinda sad and pathetic really. Smoking is a "pleasure"? People who think that need to find a hobby or something. Take up chess or cards or go for a walk.
I can kinda see where drinking (in moderation), is a "pleasure" - but 6c on a can of beer is not going to break the bank. Top side it is R6 a month. After that, it is alcoholism - see above point on smoking in that case.

Rural people would rather spend their money on beer and smokes than a chessboard. I think they walk enough without having their own transport. This 6c is added to last years 20c which is added to the years before that 10c (guessing the numbers), etc.

Ja, I agree with Peter. It won't stop the hard core okes... but it will make a lot of people not start in the first place, and will discourage a lot of casual drinking and experimentation... which is a good thing for the economy. Less accidents and health degradation.
