And he's right. There's not much you can do with this story besides evil vs good tropes just as we've seen in literally ever single blockbuster ever made.

Avatar is an original work. The script is written the way it is but it could have been written differently to make a better film which reflects reality more and so is helpful to society instead of being a hollow eye candy fest or even worse a hollow eye candy fest with a false message. Do yourself a favour and watch Princess Mononoke on Netflix (yes this was a blockbuster) for a far better script, more in line with reality and with a real message.

I don't watch movies for a reality check, I watch to escape reality.

The big draw for Avatar has always been the visuals. I never liked the plot in first movie but the second is an improvement...

That's a false choice. A film may be good and reflect reality and not ideology AND be a perfect example of escapism.

The plot of the second film is essentially the same. They added teen drama to it.

There is nothing wrong in liking this but this thread is about criticism, both positive and negative.

Still the same themes. What's new is the teen stuff. If you want to nitpick you could also say that there is a 2 in the title which means it is completely different in its themes.

Avatar is hardly original. The same plot and themes can be found in multiple films that came before.
Dances with Wolves
Pocahontas
Delgo
And a few others.
James Cameron sells the movie on the visuals which makes one wonder how he plans to surpass the visuals of Part 2 with the next film.

I actually see a case of diminishing returns both in quality and box office.
We already know the Quaritch/Sulley confrontation is up for recycling.

Cameron already said box office will drive the future of this franchise. We'll know Ina week or 2 where this headed.

It's already past break even so 3 and 4 is pretty much a given at this stage.

I think you misunderstood what was meant by original work. I meant that it was written to be a movie. The plot may be inspired by other things, namely the plight of the aboriginal people in North America vs the colonists.
That it is Dances with Wolves in space essentially was said 12 years ago.

But it's not an adaptation of a book, IMHO.

Still even an adaptation can be changed, as many movies look different to their original work. For example Lem's Solaris where Stanislaw Lem at one stage criticised Andrei Tarkovsky's take on the book.

The sequel is just the same with a teen drama added to it.
