US citizens touring or living in South Africa who planned to visit the Pretoria Zoo were advised on Friday not to do so.

The United States diplomatic mission cautioned citizens to be on the alert while touring the country.
 
I'm alert doing my shopping, driving to work, at home, sleeping with one eye open. Not safe these days.

Despite what the 'mericans say, is Pretoria zoo really that bad?
 
It's sad but I would have to agree with the them. Just driving to the Zoo feels dangerous and its in a very crime heavy area. Unfortunately, the fact is this is not a safe country to travel in and its getting worse each day.

There is a very good reason almost every house has walls, electric fencing, doors, security doors more security doors, alarms with armed response. It's not safe :cry:

There have been a number of armed robberies committed recently against visitors to the Pretoria Zoo. Due to these events, the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South Africa advises U.S. citizens to avoid visiting the Pretoria Zoo until the security situation at the zoo improves.

Criminal activity such as assault, armed robbery, and theft, can be particularly high in areas around hotels, tourist attractions, and public transportation centers, especially in major cities. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, and maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

Last went to Pretoria zoo back in the nineties, has the area deteriorated that much?

Yes, the routes are dangerous, Chapman's Peak... near every time I hear people going there they are robbed. In Helderberg we had +15 carjacking in Helderberg over 3 months, where 3 incidents of these had rape cases as well. It is really crazy nowadays, what happened to safety, yet police, neighbourhood watch and security are everywhere?

These people wait for you to either arrive at home or leave from home in order to enclose you in the driveway.
 
We spoke about the old days last night, where we went and play in the beautiful and well maintained parks all day long.
Then came cancer.

The point that people is trying to make is the increase with not only the crime, but also the violence. Our economy don’t have the capacity to supply the unemployed, which is only one variant at play here.
 
Avoid Durban, it IS a Zoo .....

I used to live across from Albert Park ... That was where the tropicale drive in restaurant was, where kids to play late into the night ....

Now, its the plaza for Nigerian drug lordes, pimps, prostitutes and empowered masses .....
