But they're finally cut grass and sand. You'll probably great better volumetric benefit from planting trees, if that's your argument. The deep root systems of more dry weather hardy trees can overcome the need for more water to support the grass. Instead of playing golf, people could picnic, jog, exercise, camp and do other similar things in such forests.

Of course I don't think golf courses are a major or even a minor cause of water problems in SA. As someone said, poor attention to maintenance and infrastructure is the reason.

When gold was high and whites were in power, they build a lot of highways, Koeberg power station, dams, hospitals etc. Now that gold is at the highest point in history, we are just barely getting by.
When gold sinks, SA will really be screwed. It's all because of poor management and lack of foresight by political ideologues.

I think the ANC should ban all golf courses altogether, they (golf courses) use up too much water that benefit only a few elites. South Africa is a water scare country and using water for recreational purposes is not right if you take the growth of the middle class into consideration. I think all forms of swimming pools and decorative water features such as the ones outside of Maponya Mall and the JSE must be removed/banned so that more water is available for important use. Eskom power stations use up a lot of water, but their use of water is important for the whole country, not water for someone to feel good or to have fun, etc.

Populations growing, ANC are corrupting. More dams need to be build as the population grows. ANC are not very good at building dams so will eventually blame golf courses.

Lets not forget that the reason golf courses are well maintained (in general) is due to the fact that they generate income which pays for the maintenance (and boosts the local councils coffers via tax and income in the case of the municipal courses) and the reason that our parks are derelict (in general) is due to the fact that they generate little to no income. So yes, lets take away an income generator and add another tax burden to the middle class.

The gardeners, security, drivers, caddies, soft drink sellers etc are all from disadvantaged communities. They would not have employment otherwise.

Someone also sells these golf balls and clubs. These also generate VAT and jobs in sales. Maybe some African company could manufacture golf balls? They could generate even more employment that way and there'd be less need to import Titleist golf balls.

The DA also changed street names. Golf courses use way too much water compared to soccer and rugby pitches. There might be enough water available for everyone now, but what about 20 years from now? Will there still be enough when the middle class has swelled and they all have swimming pools in their houses?

Well the ANC tries to please every South African despite what people might think. They please a certain section of the population with the Gautrain and the other section of the population with free basic services. I prefer to think long term, water might be available for everyone today but not necessarily in future.

Yeah right. Having seen several government projects over the past 18 years, it's safe to say that the cANCer helps itself before it helps anyone else. Arms deal - corrupt. New power stations - corrupt. e tolls - corrupt. New police HQ - corrupt. You see where this is going? Gautrain - probably corrupt. Zumaville - probably corrupt. And so on and so forth. Long term means not driving the tax-paying, economically active, job creating segment of the population to look abroad. Water can be sorted out after that, or there'll be no money for water for anyone.

I agree, the ANC led government is not doing a great job at all with their maintenance personnel. Why must only the poor appreciate water? What about the rich? The poor don't play with water, the rich do? Who swims in water for fun? Who decorates their offices and houses with water? If more tax is imposed on us the middle class so that more water can be available for future generations then the more tax we should pay.

Well their job loss is the price the country has to pay for water conservation. Thousands or even millions of people and billions in US tax dollars was lost due to the banning of the slave trade industry in the US, which was a very lucrative industry. If the slave trade wasn't banned then where would the world be today?

Mikhail Gorbachev once said that the 21st century is the century of the environment. In the 20th century people exploited the planet of its resources never really thinking of long term consequences. People built fun rides at amusement parks that use up a lot of water, like in Sun City which I also think must go. People took up swimming not knowing that water is a scarce resource. Oil rich countries countries in the middle east followed the western way of doing things by building structures with huge water features outside of the structure, but they forget that middle eastern countries are water scarce. So what do they do? They desalinate sea water and turn it into fresh water, which is an expensive exercise but at least they can afford it. My question to those middle eastern countries is why do they use water for fun knowing full well that water is scarce in their country? We are now in the 21st century, we now know that most of the things we as humans have done regarding wasting water should stop. We try conserve water, government runs initiatives to tell consumers not to waste water, etc. For me, a radical approach is needed, ban all swimming pools, golf courses, water features, etc. Government must also get their house in order by fixing leaking pipes, and they must scrap Shell's fracking ambitions.
