Article: Bid to save water by limiting golf courses

THE ANC wants fewer playgrounds for the rich to tee off on. One of the proposals to be discussed in Mangaung is to limit the number of golf courses in certain areas owing to water and nature conservation concerns. The proposal is among policy recommendations to be tabled at the party ’ s 53rd national congress. The party says there is a need “for further exploration of conservation initiatives, including the restriction on the number of golf courses in a particular radius”. It also proposes universal access to water for the poor and “the need to urgently provide every household with quality, clean water”. This would include portable purification tanks and water tanks for rainwater harvesting to promote “household food security”.

The article goes on to mention ANC policy issues around rhino poaching, cultural and smart-card IDs. Unfortunately I can't provide a direct link to the article because it's only read/viewed by Sunday Times subscribers.

I think the ANC should ban all golf courses altogether, they (golf courses) use up too much water that benefit only a few elites. South Africa is a water scare country and using water for recreational purposes is not right if you take the growth of the middle class into consideration. I think all forms of swimming pools and decorative water features such as the ones outside of Maponya Mall and the JSE must be removed/banned so that more water is available for important use. Eskom power stations use up a lot of water, but their use of water is important for the whole country, not water for someone to feel good or to have fun, etc.

While you are at it why not tell them to ban all sports? I mean soccer pitches cricket fields etc. use water too don't they... I think rather the ANC should stop wasting money on palaces for their president and changing random street names, and rather use that money towards infrastructure to supply fresh water to people that don't access to it. There is enough water in rivers/damns available, but getting it to the areas and people who require it is a big issue.

"The people" don't have water because the cANCer spent the pipeline maintenance money on palaces. Instead of spending the dam building money on building dams (whoa, deep), they spent it on BMWs. Rather than hire competent people to run local councils, the hired baboons with **** for brains who spent triple the cost subcontracting infrastructure work that should have been done in house, without the usual Africa-style kickbacks. It also wouldn't hurt if "the people" stopped destroying infrastructure every time they get upset that the scum they voted for lied about giving them everything for mahala.

But then they wouldn't have anything to blame on the tax-paying segment of the country. Far easier to upset a few golfers, who probably support 100 leaches each, than to admit to "the people" that corruption and stupidity are the reasons they don't have water. Most (all but 1 that I can think of) golf courses uses borehole water. The one that uses municipal water (Houghton) also happens to have a massive rain collection area that feeds a number of dams that they use to supplement their municipal usage, making the overall impact minimal. Not only that but golf courses are brilliant "green lungs" for urban areas. Get on Google Maps and look for golf courses in Jhb, nearly all of them are built along highways or major roads. They are carbon sinks. As usual the ANC is spewing baseless lies to please the uneducated masses.

Well there are risks in using borehole water too. But that's besides the point. There's plenty of water on the planet, so we just have to harness it. As for limiting water usage why don't we start with people who have many children? I mean if we're going to go round tackling this from the wrong direction anyway.

I agree that high-water usage industries should have legislated requirements within dry parts of the country. I don't think anyone would honestly debate that. That said, there are a lot of places in this country where water is not a problem.

You understand how much water fracking is supposed to use right?

In South Africa, the fracking process can require around 20 million litres of fresh water to frack one well. According to Shell, there can be as many as 32 wells on one well pad. This would mean that about 640 million litres will be used to frack 32 wells (for only one well pad). Each well pad can be between one and two and a half hectares in size.

The DA also changed street names. Golf courses use way too much water compared to soccer and rugby pitches. There might be enough water available for everyone now, but what about 20 years from now? Will there still be enough when the middle class has swelled and they all have swimming pools in their houses?

Well the ANC tries to please every South African despite what people might think. They please a certain section of the population with the Gautrain and the other section of the population with free basic services. I prefer to think long term, water might be available for everyone today but not necessarily in future.
