I hate those loud bangs with a seething passion. It makes my dogs go beserk and annoys me to no end.

The fine for the illegal use of fireworks has increased from R500 to R1500, Johannesburg metro police warned on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said it was illegal to ignite fireworks near animals, old age homes, hospitals, petrol stations, and petrol depots.

"Parents or adults who allow minors to ignite fireworks will also be fined R1500," he said.

"Street traders are not allowed to sell fireworks at all and dealers who sell fireworks must be in possession of a fireworks licence."

People were permitted to use fireworks on new year's eve between 11pm and 1am and on new year's day from 7pm to 10pm, he said.

On Tuesday, the city's emergency services said that to stage a fireworks display permission had to be obtained in writing from the fireworks working committee or from the chief fire officer in that particular region.

"The application must reach the committee or the chief fire officer 14 days in advance to allow members of the public to launch any objections," said spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

Permission also had to be obtained to let off crackers in private yards. In the application, the person had to outline the plan of the house, including any overhead pylons. A site inspection by the emergency management services would also be conducted.
Great bylaws, just cannot believe that this will be enforced.

Lol. Should have taken a picture of the robot jockeys selling fireworks at the Ventersdorp robot this morning with the cops in the background pulling over vehicles. Missed an opportunity, damn.

I can't see anything happening in Olievenhoutsbos or Mamelodi. It sounds like a war zone. :(
Not enough space in jail or enough paper to do anything about it.

Think they should distinguish between the ones that make a loud noise and the ones that are silent...just hiss etc. then ban the ones with the noise. This will encourage the people to use the silent ones .. Most people do love the fireworks, but it's mostly a visual effect that everyone likes..

What you guys think?

I hope JHB Metro are more willing to do their jobs than Durban Metro.

Durban Metro are probably the most useless bunch of scat other than a certain person residing in the Nkandla area.

Saw a couple of hawkers selling at the robots near Woodmead Makro. On my return, there was a JMPD vehicle driving slowly with 2 officers walking and scanning the plants on the pavement and no sign of the hawkers. Must have chased them and they dumped their fireworks.

There were guy's selling huge fireworks at the corner of Hans Strijdom and Lynnwood Roads. I reported to SAPS and Metro but nothing was done.
Just like the policing will obviously be non existing.

We had some moron in our neighbourhood firing off loud ones irritating our dogs and eventually stopped after a while, I wonder if he got reported as I haven't heard him again :p.
